面紗下的真容：天文學家獲得海山二星高清圖

天文學家第一次清晰地看到銀河系中最活躍的恆星系統——海山二星的中心，美極了！

海山二星（Eta Carinae）是銀河系中的重量級選手，這個雙星系統的質量大約是太陽的150倍，亮度比太陽高500萬倍，其中一部分亮度來源於恆星表面急速向外噴射的物質流，也就是恆星風。在兩星之間，恆星風以每小時1200萬千米的速度相撞，將周圍氣體加熱到數千萬攝氏度，釋放出高能X射線。海山二星在19世紀30年代有場「極大爆發」，美麗的侏儒星雲（Homunculus Nebula）就是那次爆發的產物。侏儒星雲如同瑰麗的面紗，模糊了天文學家的視線，讓他們難以窺見海山二星的真容。

最近，由馬普射電天文研究所的 Gerd Weigelt 教授領導的研究團隊終於看清了這個神秘的雙星系統。在歐洲南方天文台，他們利用多波束組合天體測量儀（AMBER，Astronomical Multi-BEam combineR）組合了來自3架1.8米可移動輔助望遠鏡的光線信號，觀測效果相當於一台130米的超大望遠鏡。最終得到的「高清圖像」中包含了很多細節。根據發表在Astronomy and Astrophysics上的文章，他們已經辨認出恆星風碰撞帶中的一些特徵，包括由雙星系統中較小恆星的稀薄恆星風撞向較大恆星的稠密恆星風形成的扇形結構。另外，強烈的恆星風暗示著海山二星垂垂老矣。利用這套儀器組合，天文學家還可以對恆星風的速度進行更準確的測量，結果可以幫助他們模擬垂死恆星系統的「雙人舞」，了解這樣的舞蹈如何幻化作宇宙中最絢麗的「焰火」。

Context.The mass loss from massive stars is not understood well.η Carinae is a unique object for studying the massive stellar wind during theluminous blue variable phase. It is also an eccentric binary with a period of5.54 yr. The nature of both stars is uncertain, although we know from X-raystudies that there is a wind-wind collision whose properties change withorbital phase.Aims. We want to investigate the structure and kinematics of η Car』sprimary star wind and wind-wind collision zone with a high spatial resolutionof ～6 mas (～14 au) and high spectralresolution of R = 12 000.

Methods. Observations of η Car were carried out with the ESO Very Large TelescopeInterferometer (VLTI) and the AMBER instrument between approximately five andseven months before the August 2014 periastron passage. Velocity-resolvedaperture-synthesis images were reconstructed from the spectrally dispersedinterferograms. Interferometric studies can provide information on the binaryorbit, the primary wind, and the wind collision.

Results. We present velocity-resolved aperture-synthesis images reconstructed inmore than 100 different spectral channels distributed across the Brγ 2.166 μmemission line. The intensity distribution of the images strongly depends onwavelength. At wavelengths corresponding to radial velocities of approximately?140 to ?376 km s?1 measured relative to linecenter, the intensity distribution has a fan-shaped structure. At the velocityof ?277 kms?1, the position angle of thesymmetry axis of the fan is ～126. The fan-shaped structureextends approximately 8.0 mas (～18.8 au) to the southeast and 5.8 mas (～13.6 au) to the northwest, measured along thesymmetry axis at the 16% intensity contour. The shape of the intensitydistributions suggests that the obtained images are the first direct images ofthe innermost wind-wind collision zone. Therefore, the observations providevelocity-dependent image structures that can be used to test three-dimensionalhydrodynamical, radiative transfer models of the massive interacting winds of ηCar.
