Hey there, welcome to another episode of 霸霸英語課堂. Today"s topic is: 98% of Americans can"t read this English word. Can you?

大家好,歡迎來到又一期的【霸霸英語課堂】。今天的主題是:98%的美國人都不會讀這個英語單詞,你會嗎?

As you"re probably aware, English spelling is a MESS. Learning to spell is definitely one of the hardest parts of learning English, for native speakers and ESL speakers! In fact, English spelling is so difficult that every year we have spelling bees to see who the "spelling champion of America" is.

你可能注意到了,英語的拼寫很複雜。學習單詞拼寫無疑是學英語最難的地方之一,無論是對母語者而言,還是對把英語作為第二外語的人也一樣。事實上,英語拼寫難到我們每年都要舉辦「單詞拼寫大賽」,來角逐誰是「美國拼寫冠軍」。

Spelling Bee,類似中國的《成語大會》節目,美國的《拼寫大賽》每年也吸引眾多高手參加

Another difficult aspect of learning English is learning how to read written words you"ve never encountered. Such as this phrase:

另一個學英語的困難點是,去讀你從來沒見過的書寫單詞,比如下面這個短句:

Herodotus was given the rank of colonel in the Episcopalian church.

希羅多德在聖公會教堂中被提拔為上校。

That"s definitely a tough one. It"s hard to get the stresses in the right place, even for native speakers. I still get made fun of by my mom for pronouncing "Episcopal" as "Episcopal" when I was young.

這絕對算是很難的一句。很難去找到需要加重音的正確位置,就算是母語者也一樣。我媽媽到現在還會笑話我小時候把"Episcopal" 發成"Episcopal"。

The good news is, you have many resources to help you find the correct pronunciation of a word, such as online dictionaries.

但好消息是,你可以通過許多資源讓你獲得正確的發音,比如在線詞典。

However, if you don"t have a dictionary handy, here are 3 rules that may help you in pronouncing some difficult words:

然而,如果你沒有好用的詞典,這裡有三個規則,也許可以在一些較難的單詞發音上幫到你。

Rule 1: Vowels followed by consonants are pronounced as "short vowels".

規則1:在輔音後面的母音,發成「短母音」。

Examples: Man, ham, bat, Ben

Rule 2: Words ending in "silent e" usually are pronounced with a long vowel.

規則2:結尾「e」不發音的單詞,通常前面會有一個「長母音」。

Examples: Write, kite, termite, ease,

Rule 3: If two vowels are next to each other, the first vowel is usually pronounced long.

規則3:如果兩個母音連在一起,第一個母音通常發「長母音」。

Examples: beat, train, true, load.

Note, there are always exceptions to these rules, so it"s always best to consult with a dictionary.

注意:規則總有例外,所以最保險的,還是去查詞典。

Also, unfortunately stress rules in English are practically nonexistent, so you"ll just have to look them up in a dictionary, like our earlier example, Herodotus. Many people would incorrectly pronounce that word as "Hero-dotus", but because of its Ancient Greek origin, the stress is on the second syllable!

還有,不幸地是,在英語中實際上是沒有「重讀規則」的,所以你還是要在詞典里看。就好比我我們剛剛的例句中,Herodotus,很多人都會錯誤地讀成 "Hero-dotus",但由於它的詞源來自於古希臘語,所以重讀應該在第二個音節上。

If you"re interested in this topic, I can do another post later on more difficult stress patterns in English.

如果你對這個主題感興趣,我之後還可以針對「英語重讀難點」再做一期內容。

BONUS: Here are ten words that Chinese English speakers have difficulty pronouncing:

And finally, the word that 98% of American speakers cannot pronounce correctly! What is it?

最後,那個98%的美國人都會讀不準的英語單詞,到底是什麼呢?

ghoti

Before I tell you how to say it, I want you to try and say it. I"ll give you a couple seconds.

在我教你它的正確發音之前,我想讓你試著念看看,我會給你幾秒鐘的時間。

I bet you said "gah-tee" or "go-tee", didn"t you? Yep, that"s what most people say.

我敢賭,你一定讀成了 "gah-tee" 或者是 "go-tee"對吧?沒錯,大多數人都會這樣念。

Well, the real answer is:

然而,正確答案是:

Fish! Ghoti is pronounced "fish".

「Fish」! 「Ghoti」應發成"fish"的音。

How can that be? It turns out that "ghoti" is a word popularized by famous author and linguist George Bernard Shaw to show how ridiculous English spelling is. Here"s why it"s pronounced fish:

怎麼會這樣呢?原來,"Ghoti"一詞是由著名作家和語言學家喬治·蕭伯納提出的,用來告訴大家英語拼寫有多荒謬。下面說說為什麼它會讀作"fish":

98%的美國人都不會讀這個英語單詞,你會嗎?

戲劇作家、語言大師喬治·蕭伯納(左2)和魯迅、蔡元培、宋慶齡等名人合照

"gh" comes from the "gh" in words like rough, tough, enough, where "gh" is pronounced as "f"

「gh」 來自於像「 rough, tough, enough」這些詞中的 「gh」 ,在這些詞中它們都發成 「f」的音

"o" comes from the word women, where "o" is pronounced as "i"

「o」 源於單詞「women」,這個詞里的「o」發成「i」的音

And "ti" comes from words like ambition, transition, ignition where "ti" is pronounced as "sh".

而 "ti" 來自於像「ambition, transition, ignition」這些詞,「ti」 發成了 「sh」的音。

So the word "ghoti" is actually pronounced "fish"! Pretty cool, huh? Now go impress your friends with this new knowledge.

所以「ghoti」這個詞,就該讀作「fish」! 是不是很酷?現在就去向小夥伴們展示這個新姿勢吧!

Hope you enjoyed this lesson, and good luck with your English! I"m 王霸膽, and I"ll see you next time!
