1984 年，美國攝影家史蒂夫·麥凱瑞在巴基斯坦白沙瓦附近的難民營拍下了這個阿富汗女孩的樣子。 1985 年，這幅名為《阿富汗少女》（又稱《綠眼睛姑娘》）的照片登上了美國《國家地理》雜誌的封面。古拉帶著驚恐的綠色眼睛攝人心魄，震撼了許多人，並從此以後成為了世界受苦難的社會底層婦女以及兒童的標誌。

但是，麥凱瑞當年只是匆匆拍下這張照片，沒有留下任何關於她的信息。之後的十幾年時間裡，古拉這個人究竟身在何處又處境如何，沒人知道。在這期間，古拉根本不知道自己的形象已經在全球引起了多大的反響。

她再次走入世人的視線是照片問世 17 年後的 2002 年。那一年，麥凱瑞懷揣著想再見那個綠眼睛姑娘一眼的願望再次踏上阿富汗土地，麥凱瑞聯繫了當地熟人，還運用了 FBI 的調查技術，在幾次三番認錯人之後，他才終於確定莎爾巴特·古拉就是當年他拍的那個姑娘。

再次給古拉拍攝了一張照片：臉變得蒼老了，眼睛也不如當年清澈，但眼中的驚恐依舊。麥凱瑞也在這是第一次了解到了古拉的故事， 18 年前他拍下那張照片的前幾天，古拉的家被戰機轟炸，父母被炸死了。祖母帶著她和哥哥連夜匆匆埋葬了父母之後，就在冰天雪地中翻山越嶺地逃去了難民營。後來，她在 1992 年又回到了阿富汗。1992 年到 2002 年的十年間，阿富汗在經歷什麼相信大家都知道，麥凱瑞再次見到古拉時，她的生活依舊饑寒交迫。

《國家地理》雜誌1888年10月創刊時，只是一份學術性的科學刊物，反映著小眾讀者（多為專業人士）的興趣。封皮是傳統的棕紅色，文中沒有照片——僅有一些嚴肅文章討論諸如《地質考察中的地理方法》、《地理形態按的起源的分類》和《1888年3月11－14日的大風暴》這樣的題目。
