洛布古典叢書


The Loeb Classical Library


《洛布古典叢書》是西方聞名遐邇的一套大型文獻資料叢書,它合英美古典學者之力,經近一個世紀的翻譯的編纂而成。這套叢書專門收錄古希臘羅馬時期的文獻典籍,幾乎涵蓋了全部古希臘文和拉丁文典籍,共收錄210多位古典作家的作品,此外還包括作者已不可考的典籍譬如《十二銅表法》和在埃及發現的希臘文紙草文書等,時間跨度達1400年(公元前8世紀到公元7世紀),至1999年為止已出版491冊(截止2016年12月21日最新官網顯示為已出版532冊)。

《洛布古典叢書》最初由美國人詹姆士·洛布(James Loeb)1910年構思策劃,它的一個顯著特徵是以原文(希臘文、拉丁文)和英文對照出版,以適應一般讀者的需要。其時專門收錄古典文獻的叢書並不鮮見,德國有圖柏勒出版社(B. G. Teubner)出版的《圖柏勒古典叢書》,英國有牛津大學出版社出版的《牛津古典文獻》(Oxford Classical Texts)。前者從19世紀起出版,後者於本世紀初開始出版,均早於《洛布古典叢書》,且無論是校注還是版本質量都優於《洛布古典叢書》,直至今天仍是古典文獻的權威版本。但是,無論是《圖柏勒古典叢書》還是《牛津古典文獻》,都是純學術性的,讀者對象是古典學的專門研究者。不僅原文沒有翻譯,連各冊的前言和校注都是拉丁文的,令一般讀者望而生畏。另外,由於高水平的校注者難以尋找,所以這兩套叢書的出版進度較為緩慢,《牛津古典文獻》至今只出版了百餘冊。


相比起來,《洛布古典叢書》的學術性要略遜於上面提及的兩套古典文獻叢書。但是今天,它卻成為規模最大、影響最廣泛、使用最多的古典文獻叢書。其主要原因在於這套叢書兼顧了學術性和可讀性。叢書的宗旨有二:


一是使一般讀者能夠接觸和閱讀古典作家的作品,二是體現英美兩國的古典學學術成果。為此,叢書聘請了英美著名的古典學者擔任主編,負責組織原文的校注和翻譯,譯文力求準確流暢。為了吸引更多的讀者,叢書還特意選擇了袖珍型開本,以便"能夠放進紳士的口袋裡"。另一方面,隨著西方國家教育制度的變化,原先作為中小學教學基本內容的古希臘文和拉丁文變得越來越不重要,直至最終基本退出中小學課堂。今天除了專門的研究者以外,即使是受過大學教育的西方人也不能直接閱讀古希臘文和拉丁文文獻。因此,《洛布古典叢書》不僅受到一般讀者的歡迎,而且還為攻讀古典學、歷史學、哲學、文學、政治學等相關專業的大學生提供了理想的古典文獻讀本,成為西方大學圖書館的必備文獻工具書。


《洛布古典叢書》最初由麥克米蘭出版社和威廉·海涅曼公司在美英同時出版。1933年之後,美國的出版者改為哈佛大學出版社。威廉·海涅曼公司1989年退出叢書的出版之後,哈佛大學出版社更是成為叢書在全球的出版者和發行者。今天,它已成為哈佛大學出版社的標誌性出版物之一。

我國國內雖然古希臘文和拉丁文的許多重要著作業已譯成漢語,但仍有大半古典文獻沒有翻譯出來,其中包括一些非常重要的文獻,如波里比阿的《歷史》、李維的巨著《羅馬史》和阿里斯托芬的大部分喜劇等等。因此,對於高校教師和文科相關專業(歷史學、哲學、文學、政治)學生來說,這套叢書應當成為從事教學研究必不可少的文獻工具書。


洛布與洛布古典叢書


洛布古典叢書是英語世界眾多古典譯本中較好的譯本,採用的是獨特的古典原著與英語譯文相對照的體例。這套叢書最初全盤由詹姆斯·洛布先生籌划出資,故以其姓氏命名,從1912年開始出版,迄今已整整發行了90年。這一叢書對古典學傳播和發展所起的促進作用,詹姆斯·洛布先生善莫大焉。


詹姆斯·洛布 (1867—1933)生於紐約,早年就讀於哈佛大學致力於古典語言的學習,從小受其母親(一位職業音樂家的女兒)的熏陶,對音樂有著超凡的感悟力,曾任哈佛音樂聯誼會副主席。後雖從父命投身於金融界(其父為庫恩—洛布財團的巨頭),但並未改變對古典學的痴迷。1902年由於健康原因退出財團,1905年起,除了一戰期間以外,長年旅居德國,潛心研究古典學,並發表了若干作品,還對其個人收藏的古典時期的文物進行了整理編目,後來將這些藏品捐獻給了慕尼黑一家博物館。他還捐助巨資給哈佛古典學系,並且出任雅典美國古典學院的理事。另外,作為慈善家,對音樂事業的捐助也極為慷慨,他創辦了美國第一所私人捐助的音樂藝術學院。此外他還幫助紐約交響樂團擺脫財政危機,資助哈佛大學音樂系教學樓、音樂廳和潘恩禮堂的建設。對波士頓藝術博物館和美國考古協會的發掘工作也給予了相當的關注。在旅德期間,他還大力捐助德國醫療研究尤其是精神病學,在紐約出資興建了以其父母名字命名的康復中心。洛布先生的這些慷慨之舉無不與其深厚的人文素養相關聯。


詹姆斯·洛布先生稱得上是最熱誠的古典學家。他有感於當時機器大工業給人文精神帶來的巨大衝擊,以及社會價值取向的日趨扭曲,並且為了除卻古典語言上的障礙,使更多的人能夠受益於希臘羅馬文化這一西方最偉大的人文遺產,他身體力行出資組織英美古典學專家聯袂將西方古典原著譯成英語這一浩繁工作。洛布先生的這一行動被視為是「將天堂帶回到了人間」 的善舉。紐約時報也發表社論,稱頌他是「人文學的重構者,以其自己的方式延承了文藝復興的傳統」。為確保這一叢書不失其嚴謹的學術風範,他親自指定主編並在歐洲大陸延攬英語世界以外的資深學者作顧問。每卷書都包括出自資深專家之手的解釋性的內容評介和詳實的腳註,并力求集當時古典學研究之大成於一身。此套叢書一開始就採用了左右兩頁雙語對照的版式,使研究者便於查對希臘、拉丁語原文;為了使其成為「紳士們的隨身讀物」而設計的攜帶型裝幀也沿用至今。

1933年,洛布先生逝世後,洛布叢書及相應基金轉由其母校哈佛大學負責。當時已出版了300餘卷,現今已達493卷,縱橫15個世紀,涵蓋了公元前7世紀到公元後7世紀現存各流派的古典著作。這套叢書秉承當年嚴謹的學術態度,譯者均由一個二十二人的專家小組遴選,若沒有滿意的人選,決不涉筆翻譯。這一叢書至今仍以每年四、五卷的速度擴充,其中,有的是新增添的種類,如卡里冬的作品,有的則如歐里庇得斯的戲劇那樣完全摒棄了舊的譯本重新翻譯,更多的還是對以前譯本的部分修訂。


上述舉措一方面是為了切合時代的變遷以及英語語言自身的沿革。舊的譯文今天讀來已經顯得過於艱澀呆板,令人望而卻步;最甚者如荷馬史詩,在深受維多利亞文風熏染的老一輩譯家筆下雅緻到幾乎不能卒讀的地步,彷彿這樣才配得上荷馬的詩作,結果是原本色彩斑斕的史詩反而令讀者興味索然。另一方面是為了加入近年來學者對原文新的體認,同時更新訛誤或過時的注釋,使譯文更精到,目的都是儘可能彰顯其學術上的嚴謹性。再者,鑒於十九世紀六十年代前的譯文出於當時社會風化的禁忌,對不能見容的部分作了相當程度的刪改,這就嚴重沖淡了作品原有的特色,令讀者對古代文明的認識也大打折扣,對柏拉圖和卡圖魯斯等人所表述的同性戀內容就譯得曲折隱晦,令人匪夷所思。有時正文中刪節的內容被置於腳註中,但譯者仍然極盡故弄玄虛之能事,要麼將希臘語原文譯成拉丁語,要麼將拉丁語原文譯成義大利語,語義仍然含糊不清,令讀者莫名其妙。其中以落拓不羈著稱於世的戲劇大師阿里斯托芬的作品被認為包含了大量俚俗猥褻的東西,但其天才恰恰在於「詼諧中含真智,荒誕中見深邃」這一風格的揮灑自如,收放有致,而讀者從曲折委婉層層刪節後的舊譯文中是絕難深刻領會這些精妙之處的。


這些忠實於原作並且與時俱進的出版理念日臻完善,使得古典作品歷久彌新,「古典」與「現代」之間天塹變通途,雅俗兼賞,在學術界同樣享有較高的聲譽。唯一欠妥之處在於對校勘本中有爭議的字句完全依據譯者一家的裁定,沒有補充其他版本作為參考,雖為細枝末節,仍在一定程度上給一些學者的研究帶來不便。


洛布叢書不僅在國外,在國內也有著一定的影響,例如,商務印書館出版的漢譯世界學術名著中的諸多卷目就是譯自其英譯。據悉國內有的學者也將仿照洛布叢書的體例出版一套譯自希臘、拉丁語原文的漢譯對照本古典叢書。這一舉措倘若付諸實施必將極大的推動西方古典學這一偉大的人文遺產在中國的傳播和研究,同時促進我們對西方形而上世界更深層次的解讀、更高境界的溝通。
