美國南加大竟然這麼牛！

USC南加大成立於1880年，是一所衛理宗大學，校地由三位富有的洛杉磯居民捐贈，大學開設時，共招收了53位學生和10位教職人員。首屆畢業生有3人-兩男一女，數十年後，USC南加大不再帶有宗教信仰，正式獨立於衛理宗教堂。

南加大在成立後就不斷的開始成長，除了位於洛杉磯市區南方2英哩的主要校區("大學公園校區")之外，學校也於市區北方2英哩處設立了健康科學校區，在橘縣的爾灣(Irvine)，設立了商學、藥學、社工和教育學院;還有在弗吉尼亞州阿靈頓縣以及Marina del Rey的資訊科學研究所，公共管理學院則位於衛星校區加州薩克拉門托。在2005年，南加大於華府成立了聯邦關係辦事處，在阿罕布拉市也有健康科學校區，包含健康促進與疾病預防研究所(IPR)並且專註於公共衛生方面。

白宮官方近日在國家抗癌「登月」峰會上宣布，癌症患者將可以通過一個類似社交網路的新平台——CancerBase，來繪製後續治療的藍圖。此次峰會由美國副總統Joe Biden與他的夫人Jill主持，CancerBase是峰會上重點強調的項目之一。南加大是該項目的領導者。

CancerBase由南加大生物科學、工程、醫學領域的教授Peter Kuhn協助創辦，同時他與數以百計的科學家和病患者一起參加了這次峰會，並討論了如何加快癌症研究以及改善治療效果。

癌症，作為當今時代人人都談之色變的問題之一，同樣需要多渠道的信息來進行分析。癌症研究和病患護理領域的發展，受到諸如信息共享問題的阻礙而停滯不前。CancerBase的目標就是清除這些障礙。

目前面臨的難題

Kuhn提到，癌症研究者和病患遇到的阻礙之一就是即時信息的缺失。美國的一些醫學機構存儲了大量的癌症數據，但其中大部分數據都已經過時。然而，了解最前沿的治療手段將會幫助患者和醫生制定具體的治療計劃。

南加大志願者

來自USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy的學生們自發與Kuhn及一些癌症患者共同設計在線CancerBase。通過這個平台，患者能夠快速安全地分享自己的信息，同時獲取與自己相關的有用信息。

一位USC的准大三新生Sara Ma說道：「我們試圖給予病人儘可能多的信息與力量。」

在2007年被確診為癌症的患者Ciccarella說：「曾經我根本不知道如何對抗癌症，現在有了CancerBase，我們將會找到一個清晰的前行方向。」

The cancer-mapping initiative CancerBase was one of several highlighted at the summit hosted by Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill.

Hundreds of patients and scientists — including Peter Kuhn, who helped create CancerBase and is a USC Dean』s Professor of Biological Sciences, Engineering and Medicine — attended the summit to discuss efforts that may speed up research of the disease and improve patient outcomes.

Cancer is among the many 「wicked problems」 of our time — those that require multiple approaches to understand. Progress in cancer research and patient care is hindered by problems such as access to information. CancerBase aims to address some of those barriers.

Obstacles to discovery

One of the barriers that cancer researchers and patients encounter is a lack of timely information, said Kuhn. U.S. institutions amass vast quantities of cancer data, but much of the statistical data is stale. Knowing what treatments are new and available could influence health care decisions that patients make with their doctors.

Academic Volunteers

Students at the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy volunteered to work with Kuhn and some cancer patients on the design of the online CancerBase to ensure that they could easily and securely share information and then receive useful data in return.

「We』re trying to give patients as much knowledge and as much power as we can,」 said Sara Ma, who will be a junior at the academy this fall.

「I had no roadmap,」 said Ciccarella, who recalled that she was diagnosed 20 years after her mother』s diagnosis in 1987. 「With CancerBase, now we will have a way to navigate.」
