「曠野而壯觀」的西弗吉尼亞。

西弗吉尼亞州的新河峽（New River Gorge）著實擁有不少可以誇耀的資本。從地質上而言，新河(New River)被稱作世界第三大古老河流。事實上，由於新河的形成年代早於周圍山脈，因而它的流向是從南向北——不同於多數河流。

新河峽大橋（New River Gorge Bridge）也毫不遜色，它是美國最長，也是世界第三長的鋼架拱橋。橋長924米，拱跨518米。古河加大橋，得出什麼結果？——世界規模最大的極限運動盛會：大橋跳傘節（Bridge Day）。

大橋跳傘節每年10月在西弗吉尼亞州的費耶特維爾（Fayetteville）舉行。每年這一天，大橋上禁止車輛通行，完全對行人開放。成千上萬人慕名而來，欣賞數百名跳傘運動員和極限跳傘運動員從267米高處跳入河中。

「Wild and Wonderful」 West Virginia

West Virginia』s New River Gorge has a lot of bragging rights. Geologically, the New River has been called the third-oldest river in the world. In fact, because the New River was formed before the mountains, it flows south to north — unlike most other rivers.

Not to be outdone, the New River Gorge Bridge is the longest steel arch bridge in the United States and the third-longest in the world. The bridge is 924 meters in length and its arch spans 518 meters. So what do you get when you combine an old river with a big bridge? The largest extreme sports event in the world: Bridge Day.

Every October Fayetteville, West Virginia, hosts Bridge Day. It is the one day of the year when the bridge is officially closed to traffic and opened up it to pedestrians. Thousands of spectators come to the bridge to watch as hundreds of parachutists and base jumpers descend 267 meters off the bridge to the New River Gorge below.
