Trapped Whales 被困的鯨群-October 7:美國歷史上的今天

內容提要:在阿拉斯加巴羅角受困的三頭鯨得到美國和前蘇聯人民救助脫困的故事。

On October 7, 1988, near Point Barrow 巴羅角, Alaska, three gray whales were sighted 看見 by local villagers. This was unusual because, by this time of year, all the other whales had already headed south for the winter.

The villagers of Point Barrow knew that the huge mammals 哺乳動物 were in serious trouble. They knew that if the whales could not find holes in the ice big enough for them to come up to breathe, they would die.

The only way these three whales could survive would be to get them to open water. The problem was that the ocean was five miles away and those miles were covered with ice two feet thick.

If the whales tried swimming under the ice without coming up for air for those five miles, they would surely die.

The whales had to come up every four minutes to take a breath. Every time they did, the sharp ice cut their skin, causing their noses and heads to bleed.

The villagers tried to break the ice and keep the holes open, but they knew that if they were able to save those whales, they would need help from the outside.

The news of the trapped mammals spread across the country. Volunteers rushed to Point Barrow. They brought chain saws 鏈鋸 so they could cut through the ice, but the ice was too thick. The whales remained trapped.

Finally, the Soviet Union offered to help. They sent two giant ships called icebreakers 破冰船 that broke the ice and freed the whales.
