This is the real answer for basketball and American football. Cut the NCAA out and develop your own talent. Baseball has a system somewhat for this already with the farm league and drafting players out of HS.

The average age of an mlb rookie is like 25 though. A similar system would be hard in the nba and they would just rush players through after a year or two and they wouldn t really be any better off than if they had just played that year or two in college.

I disagree. 2 years ago, in 2015 there was at least 10 players in the Premier league who were 16 years of age.

You could never have 10 or more 16 year olds in the NBA, or NFL, or NHL. These leagues are just too physical. Bron was a physical specimen and even he would may have had a tough time in the NBA at 16 years old.

I personally think it is definitely easier for young soccer players to play against grown men then it is for basketball players or football players or hockey players.

Mark Cuban suggested a proposal that combines elements of the draft with free agency. Draft order determines how much cap space teams have to sign rookies to contracts. So the first overall pick can offer a rookie $5M a year over 4 years, second overall can offer them $4.75M, and on and on. Worse teams can pitch more money and playing time, but better teams can pitch culture and development. Some rookies just want playing time to develop.

This proposal wouldn t kill small market teams. San Antonio is a small market and they d have a lot of good rookies want to play for them. Agents are going to push players towards the best situations to develop them, whether that be with more playing time on a bad team or more coaching. If one good team gets a lot of great rookies, the salary cap will mean that they can t all be re-signed. The Warriors situation was special because of the spiking cap. This could also result in the most insane, exciting rookie free agency every year!

I think honestly you might have to keep them out of the league longer. Otherwise players like Draymond Green would have been playing for peanuts, you ll wreck your franchise throwing money at players like Anthony Bennett. The issue is it s a noisy inequality amplifier. Draft steals become game changers, busts become atom bombs.

Yeah but any time the lakers etc. had cap space they would always be the favorites to aquire a rookie. And any time a lebron/MJ level prospect came along they would probably just trade away contracts until they had enough cap space to grab them. Would basically mean that for all their cap space, a team like the Bucks would never get the change to snag a top tier talent.

Well I think this can be maneuvered around. For example, only two rookie signing rights per team. Make those trade-able like picks. Allow only one max rookie contract and make sure the signing team has cap space. So teams with the best players wouldn』t be able to go over the cap.

Obviously there would be tuning necessary, but I think there are realistic solutions if the effort is put in.
