2017 World Press Photo annual contests are now open

The World Press Photo Foundation invites all professional visual journalists worldwide to participate in its two renowned contests: the 60th annual World Press Photo Contest and the 7th annual World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest (previously known as the Multimedia Contest).

The 2017 Photo Contest requires registration before 6 January 2017 12.00 (noon) CET and submissions can be entered until 11 January 2017 12.00 (noon) CET.

The deadline for submissions for the 2017 Digital Storytelling Contest is 6 January 2017 12.00 (noon) CET.

The winners of both contests will be announced together for the first time on 13 February 2017.

There are a number of minor changes in the setup of the photo contest, including changes in the Long-Term Projects category and the number of images allowed in a story.

The 2017 World Press Photo Contest

The annual photo contest, which has been running since 1955, rewards photographers for the best single-exposure pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism. Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin will chair the 2017 Photo Contest jury, joined by a group of 18 professionals. Details of the procedures and voting system, the jury members, along with the code of ethics, rules, categories, and guidance on what is not acceptable with regards to manipulation, are available at: http://www.worldpressphoto.org/activities/photo-contest

Prizes

The prize-winning photographs are assembled into an exhibition that travels to 45 countries and is seen by more than 4 million people each year. The winning pictures are also published in the annual yearbook, which is available in multiple languages. Award winners (or one representative for a Long-Term Project category group) have their travel and lodging paid for by the World Press Photo Foundation to Amsterdam so they can attend the World Press Photo Festival of Visual Journalism, an event taking place 20-22 April 2017 featuring photographer presentations, screenings, and talks. They also receive a diploma and a Golden Eye Award at the Awards Ceremony.

The 2017 World Press Photo Contest at a glance

The contest has a code of ethics that must be accepted before entering.

A guidance on how to write captions and avoid manipulation is available here: http://www.worldpressphoto.org/activities/photo-contest/verification-process

Long-Term Projects is now one category, and accepts entries shot by either an individual photographer or a group of two or more photographers.

Story entries should contain 2-10 images. Long-Term Projects entries consist of between 24-30 pictures.

Participants must provide file(s) as recorded by the camera for all images that proceed to the final stages of the contest. These file(s) will be requested and studied confidentially during the judging period. Failure to provide these files when requested will lead to the elimination of the entry.

If manipulation is detected in an entry, the photographer(s) will be contacted during the judging period to offer an explanation that will be forwarded to the jury. Once contacted, photographer(s) will have 36 hours to respond.

Participants can be contacted and asked to verify their captions and metadata with the fact-checking team.

The contest has four categories and is judged online.
