It"s obvious that Lebron is one of the best offensive players of all time. But he also is a really good defender, even having some of his best career highlights on that end of the floor. I am just curious if people would say that he is one of the best defenders of all time as well?

Damn, this is crazy. Was that really his best defensive playoff run of his career too? It"s obvious he was playing lockdown D from the eye test alone but I"m surprised he never had a better season when he still had all of his athleticism in Miami.

Well these stats are playoff stats, and DPOTY is a regular season award. Lebron has flashes in the regular season, but these days he definitely doesn"t consistently put up numbers like this over the course of the year.

Reputation is the reason Kobe got about 4 of his 1st D teams or why people are incapable of admitting that Kawhi"s defense has indeed gone down by a bit this season.

It"s not just decline per se, but the idea of LeCoast. It"s why Shaq didn"t muster more regular season MVP"s (and because there were so many all-time greats during that era); you cant have this perception of taking it easy during the season defensively (or for Shaq not dominating to the extent we believe he could and did) and win an award based on defense.

At his peak level, absolutely. He has the quickness to stay in front of most guards and the athleticism to recover if they blow by him. The strength to handle most bigs and quick hands to strip the ball without fouling. Great conservative instincts, rarely biting on pump-fakes and rarely caught out of position, hardly ever fouls, plays the passing lanes tremendously without gambling that much. He reads the whole floor and can make lightning fast disrupting rotations when necessary, including weak side help at the rim. He rarely spends the energy to box out, and relies on his leaping ability and hands to snare contested rebounds, which he is very good at when of a mind to be, again, this depends on his urgency level, because he often gives up offensive rebounds when his matchup sneaks in behind him as a shot goes up, one of his self-admitted weaknesses.

The thing is, he doesn"t engage this defensive ability until he thinks his team really needs it. In the regular season he plays just enough defense to be a net positive - a passive glide with bursts of energy when he deems fit, to dart into a passing lane here or make a key rotation there, but without multiple efforts. In the east playoffs, he"ll increase his general activity level and depending on his energy and what"s going on in the flow of the game, dial it up to 10. In the Finals when the entire season on the line is the only time now where you"ll see him actively give every possession the urgency it deserves, until he has nothing left in the tank.

LeBron is one of the only players we"ve ever seen that"s able to go from "net positive" at his worst to "absolute defensive force" at his best, basically at the snap of a finger. Of course, it takes a ton of energy for a guy that big to fly around the court like he can, so his defensive peak is only seen in bursts, but when engaged, he is absolutely one of the best ever.

There are defensive specialists that are better imo. He"s really good top 5% or something, but not top 10 or probably 20 he isn"t better than Kawhi, Duncan, Oscar Robertson, David Robinson, Mutombo, Russel, Pippen, Bowen, Rodman. Hell i"d add deandre jordan too and I"m sure there are many other defense first players I"m missing. Because basically Lebron is very good, but I would say historically not too much special among the very good defenders.

We can say Peak Kawhi (what we"ve seen the past few years) is better. Career Kawhi we haven"t seen yet, so we don"t know.

100%. His body mixed with his BBIQ made him a defensive monster in Miami from 2010-2013. Not to mention he made the chasedown his staple and can guard 1-5.

Yes, he"s a rim protector, a lockdown defender when he needs to be, and most importantly someone who can switch in any situation. Modern defensive strategy has evolved so much beyond 90"s man defense and he"s one of the ideal defenders for team defense.

Whilst I agree Lebron is one of the best defensive players ever.

"Rim protector" is a big stretch, getting blocks and actively protecting the rim, affecting everything in the paint etc. like a Gobert are 2 different things.

You could argue he offers decent rim protection for a SF, but he"s not a rim protector in the conventional sense, now or all time.

儘管我認同詹姆斯是最好的防守者之一，但是「禁區防守者」還有待商榷。像戈貝爾那樣封蓋並且積極護框，在禁區影響所有事情等等就是兩碼事了。
