將心拿來，我為汝安

達摩祖師遠觀震旦眾生根機明利，適應禪修法門。所以，發菩提心克服種種困難險阻來到中國，當時，信奉佛教的梁武帝得知消息，心花怒放，諭請達摩祖師進宮弘法。達摩祖師應請來到皇都——南京。

When Bodhidharma contemplated in meditation, he detected remotely that the people in China were endowed with the sharp intelligence that is suitable for meditative practice. Motivated by great aspirations, he undertook an arduous journey from India to China to transmit the Dharma. Upon his arrival, the then Emperor Wu of the South & North Dynasty, a Buddhist believer himself, was so excited that he invited Bodhidharma to the royal capital Nanjing to teach the Dharma.

梁武帝問道：「請教大師：我一生精勤建造寺院、度人出家修道、書寫佛經、廣作佛事，不知有多少功德？」「毫無功德。」達摩祖師毫不客氣地回答。

The emperor asked Bodhidharma, 「Master, I have been committed to Buddhism all my life by building temples, supporting renunciations, copying sutras and financing ritual events. How much merit have I earned?」 「None,」 replied Bodhidharma straightforwardly.

梁武帝聽後，十分不悅，以深為不解的語氣說：「我做了這麼多好事，你竟敢說我沒有功德，這是什麼道理？」「你所做的事業都是有漏功德，僅是人天福報，輪迴之因，並非解脫之德。」達摩祖師用緩慢而又慈和的語氣，為梁武帝解釋。

The emperor became unhappy on hearing this, asking the master doubtfully, 「Why is there no merit when I have done so many good deeds?」 「Because all the good deeds you have done will only result in contaminated merits in relation to secular and celestial blessings; they will still lead to samsara instead of nirvana,」 explained Bodhidharma with compassion and peace.

然而，固執不已的梁武帝依然不能覺悟。達摩祖師深知話不投機，於是離開了南京，來到河南少室山，用心潛修，弘揚禪法。整整經過九年，才遇到一位真正為法忘軀的修道人，這位修道人，就是中國禪宗的第二代祖師慧可大師。慧可大師得知從印度來了一位得道高僧在少室山面壁坐禪，經過千山萬水來到少室山，找到了達摩祖師。然而，達摩祖師依然面壁不動。

Stubborn as he was, the emperor still didn』t wake up. Bodhidharma realized the disagreement, so he left Nanjing for Shaoshi Mountain in Henan, where he retreated for nine years before a genuinely devoted truth seeker travelled a long, long way to study with him. This man was Huike, the second patriarch of the Chinese Chan lineage. But Bodhidharma remained unmoved in his sitting position facing the wall.

慧可大師為了求受達摩祖師的禪法，在離達摩祖師不遠的雪地上長跪七天七夜，達摩祖師終於啟口：「你這是何為？」「為了求法。」慧可懇切地說。「就憑你這樣，就可以求到禪法？等到天上下紅雪，也不能求到。」達摩祖師用考驗的語氣對跪在雪地上的慧可說。慧可大師心想：「天上怎麼會下紅雪呢？」思量間，他毅然決定砍斷左臂，鮮血染紅了白雪。

Huike, in keen supplication for the Dharma, knelt for seven days and nights on the snowy ground nearby. 「Why do you act this way?」 Bodhidharma asked. 「For the Dharma,」 replied Huike sincerely. 「Stop dreaming. You will never get the Dharma even if red snow falls on the ground,」 Bodhidharma stated. 「How could red snow be possible?」 While thinking this, Huike decisively cut his left arm and the white snow became red.

達摩祖師終於找到了禪法的接班人，就問：「你要求何法？」「我要求安心法門。」「將心拿來，我為汝安。」「覓心了不可得。」慧可大師想了想說。「好，我已為汝安心竟。」這時慧可大師豁然開悟。

Bodhidharma was moved by Huike and accepted him as his successor. 「What Dharma do you want?」 「I want a method to stabilize my mind.」 「Give me your mind and I will stabilize it.」 「I looked for it, but couldn』t find it,」 Huike pondered. 「Well, I have finished stabilizing your mind.」 Huike was enlightened.
