Russell Westbrook was a 3 star athlete, Ranked Top 160 in Class of 2006, had his first dunk in the 12th grade, wasn"t an All-American and had no major camp invites (self.nba)

And he just averaged a 30 point triple double in the NBA. This is why I love his story and why he inspires me more than any other athlete in the world right now.

no-one dunks as often and as hard as Westbrook, when I first got into the NBA (about 5 years ago) when I was looking for a team to watch I watched the all star game and Westbrook was the only guy that looks like he wants to literally destroy the rim on every dunk, that passion and explosiveness just drew me to OKC.

edit: before westbrook D.rose was my favourite but all the injuries I didn"t get to watch him much of his mvp season/before the knee injuries, he"s so smooth when driving and his dunks were amazing as well, that"s what i"m all about, brute force.

Russ isn"t as genetically blessed as everyone thinks, he"s worked a ton on his athleticism over the years. Go look at a picture of his brother for comparison.

Edit: To be clear I"m not saying he has bad genes. Obviously he was born with athletic gifts. My point is that people discount how much of his explosiveness is due to training and hard work versus his luck and chance.

Of course, but I think a lot of people try to discredit the work athletes put in as some sort of "genetic advantage," when no amount of God given talent can get you to Westbrook levels of athleticism without a LOT of work mixed in.

I don"t think anyone is saying that they don"t work on their athleticism, but obviously, some people are more gifted than others. For an average joe like me I"d probably have to squat a lot and work on my explosiveness if I want to dunk. LeBron James was dunking in 8th grade, and that"s just off pure athleticism and not from some squatting regime.

Is he more athletic than Westbrook? Honestly Lebron is super athletic especially for his size, but I think WB is faster and jumps higher which I think is pretty crazy for his size.

This is one of the most athletic plays I"ve ever seen by someone who is 6"3 - 6"4. the second angle on the replays is just insane

Watching the ESPN story on this gave me so much respect for Russ. He still reps his friend on the court every night, and after he died, he woke up early every morning to go to his friend"s house and do chores in his place.

I used to not like Westbrooks play but I have respected him more from his heart and his improvement as a player. His heart is something that has always been there but I never knew he was a 3 star athlete in HS. He kind of is like Curry where both weren"t hyped like Wiggins or Ball.

Westbrook is one of the hardest working NBA players and represents a dying breed of athletes who dedicate their life around the game and put their competitive nature above friendships and all else. He has a killer instinct, unlike your favorite NBA player, and is more than a generational talent. Why are people hating on him for chasing a triple double in a game where he would get an all-time record? He would be the only player in NBA history to do this and is it so bad that he would want to do this when the game is already over?

Basketball is not guaranteed and Russell knows this better than anyone, having been injured and missing an entire post-season. He does not take this for granted.

If Russ ever wins a title, his story might make the best sport documentary ever. He is the ultimate underdog. People just seeing what he"s doing today would never guess what lengths he had to go to just to make it on an NBA roster, let alone become a top 5 player in the league.
