20年老球迷和大家聊聊NBA。

在我們等待總決賽開始的同時，我決定給大家分享一些20年來NBA里發生的有趣事情。也許一些論壇上的老球迷能夠對我的這份列表有所補充，同時我也會很好奇那些年輕的球迷們對我下面寫的這些內容會有什麼看法。

首先有一點我要先提出來，我最初是在1997-1998賽季開始看NBA的，所以下面的故事看起來是以科比/沙克/卡特為主線的話，這便是因為在我的成長過程中猛龍和湖人是我最喜歡的球隊。

隨著時間的進行，輿論總是會被球員本身或者分析師們改寫。

當科比和沙克剛開始在一起打球時，輿論的導向都是科比是奧尼爾的腿部掛件，是奧尼爾在領導著湖人贏球。當時普遍的觀點是任何一個其他頂尖的SG（麥迪，艾弗森，卡特）只要有巔峰沙克作隊友，都能贏下那3枚戒指。然而17年後，便出現了像巴克利這樣的人（10年前他經常公開批評科比）說科比才是那個帶領奧尼爾贏下3枚戒指的人。

同時現在沙克也總喜歡說納什在2005和2006年搶走了本屬於他的MVP，雖然2005年他確實有非常大的機會（MVP投票排名第2），但是2006年奧尼爾根本就不是特別出色，事實上他都沒有進入MVP投票的前10，因為他只打了59場比賽，場均只有20/9。當時熱火隊真正的MVP應該是韋德，那一年他在MVP最終投票中排名第6。但是沙克喜歡去掩飾這個事實從而提高自己的地位。

球迷們會忘掉很多事情...而且贏球能改變所有的東西。

曾經有2年的時間裡（2004-2006），科比是目前為止全美最討厭過的運動員。當然，現在誰也不會記得這些了，但是在那兩年的時間裡，科比幾乎在任何場館打球都會被噓。主要原因有兩個：他在場外候審的性侵案，以及人們認為是他排擠走了沙克和菲爾-傑克遜。而這麼久過去後，同時又拿到了2枚總冠軍戒指，科比便從NBA里最被憎恨的球員搖身變成了一位傳奇的巨星偶像，而且不可能做錯過任何事情（尤其在中國）。同樣的事情也發生在了勒布朗身上，我見證他從英雄變成完完全全的反派（「決定」後），然後又重新變成了英雄。我有預感同樣的事情也會發生在杜蘭特身上。

巔峰的沙克在2000年NBA總決賽的6場比賽中場均砍下38分17籃板外加3蓋帽，儘管他是個敏感的大寶貝，1999-2002年的沙克是我活到現在見過的最有統治力的球員。目前為止我還沒有見過任何一個人在季後賽里像這樣的不可阻擋。

過去20年里NBA中被遺忘的事情，包括查爾斯-奧克利因為蒂龍-希爾一些沒有償清的債務而掌摑對方，阿里納斯在更衣室里的持槍門，在2006到2007賽季開始時NBA嘗試使用了所有人都討厭的新籃球，勒布朗/Nike沒收了喬丹-克勞福德在夏季野球時隔扣勒布朗的錄像帶，沙克在2年之內都拒絕提起科比的名字，沙克離開邁阿密時對萊利的鄙視，沙克離開湖人時對傑里-巴斯的鄙視，以及沙克對大范甘迪的鄙視（看出主題來沒有？），勒布朗在2011年總決賽時對德克的嘲諷；安東尼出現在了「停止告密」的DVD里，讓人們不要去告密；卡爾-馬龍對科比老婆的動手動腳以及科比對其的反擊，Nas在歌曲「These Are Our Heroes」中對科比的鄙視；所有人都憎恨卡特，因為他不願意在2003年全明星上把自己的首發位置讓給喬丹，瑪麗亞-凱莉在全明星上穿著喬丹球衣的演唱；麥迪對自己的毒奶，說終於能夠進入季後賽第2輪了，之後便葬送了3-1的領先優勢，在G7中被擊敗；安東尼-皮勒對加內特臉部的肘擊，等等。

人們忘記了鄧肯在新秀賽季的第二年便帶領馬刺獲得了總冠軍，還是在沒有吉諾比利和帕克的條件下達到的。他在2002和2003年之間蟬聯了常規賽的MVP，2003年總決賽時他場均24/17/5，外加5蓋帽。鄧肯拿下了5座NBA總冠軍，但是卻從來沒有在史上最偉大球員的談論中被提起過，儘管他的MVP數，FMVP數都要比科比多，而且和科比有著一樣多的戒指。

高階數據徹底的改變了比賽。

2001年的時候，傑里-斯塔克豪斯在投籃命中率40%的情況下場均30分，放到現在的比賽里，他會被認為是個低效率的毒瘤，而且可能會被無休止的批評。但是在當時，卻被認為是很正常的，他，艾弗森和其他的一些球員都場均接近30分，同時命中率低於45%。比如艾弗森，在命中率只有42%的情況下拿到了2001年的MVP。當時沒有人會去在意命中率，只要球是被球隊里最好的球員出手的。

但是在2008年左右，在勒布朗的崛起以及完全態的巔峰科比現身後，數據革命便開始了。一些像TrueHoop這樣的專欄不喜歡科比，因為他們覺得在高階數據的角度下，科比是個被高估以及低效的浪投者，關鍵時刻可靠性也不是很強。同時，勒布朗在高階數據的角度下則是聯盟顯然的第一人（這在當時並不是個受歡迎的觀點）。這最終導致了像真實命中率等其他高階衡量標準被籃球迷們所普遍接受，認為這才是「真正」的數據。

德安東尼的7秒進攻（SSOL）改變了聯盟。

你要知道在那支2004-2005年炮轟太陽出現之前，聯盟中90%的球隊都打著以防守為主的進攻，節奏非常慢，極其有條理，而且單打特別多。炮轟的太陽完全改變了這一點，並用他們的快節奏打法，小個陣容（斯塔德邁爾中鋒，迪奧大前）以及風騷的傳球在進攻端完成了變革。

這最終導致了熱火在球員們各自的巔峰打小球陣容（波什中鋒，勒布朗大前），並且也促成了2014年的馬刺熟練的用快節奏和傳球擊敗了同樣的那支熱火。在2017年，如果你的球隊不打這種快節奏的籃球，便會被認為是奇葩（看到了吧：尼克斯仍然還在嘗試三角進攻）。

每個時代的人們都認為自己在看著史上最偉大的球員打球。

當我最開始看NBA的時候，喬丹被認為是毫無疑問的歷史第一人，任何敢提科比，鄧肯和其他人的球迷都會被要求閉嘴。20年後，球迷中的地位開始發生了傾斜，現在再說喬丹超過勒布朗是史上第一人就是值得爭辯的了，而不是像過去一樣是個結論了。因為現在球迷們會說喬丹當時有著名人堂級別的幫手，而且競爭也弱一些，以及退役的時間等等。不管這些是不是真的，現在貶低喬丹的成就而捧高勒布朗的做法是我從來沒有想到過的。

現在確實是歷史上最好的聯盟。

我知道很多論壇里的人都對他們剛開始看球那會的NBA情有獨鍾。對於我來說，我仍然喜歡那些含有艾弗森，卡特360度扣籃以及幼年科比的回憶。但是每當我時不時真正的去看那些新世紀早期比賽的錄像時，我便意識到我們現在真的處在NBA的黃金時期。

在我最開始看NBA時，很多回合都發生在低位，非常多的單打以及糟糕的命中率。2003-2005年尤其是段奇怪的時間，因為活塞和馬刺用絞肉機般的防守把其他的球隊困在原地，每場得分只有70~80分。場下也同樣混亂，很多超級球星們都經常陷入麻煩中（艾弗森，基德的家暴，科比的強姦案，等等）。

而現在，比賽的關鍵則全部在於速度，節奏和傳球，而且超級球星們在場下也都能遠離麻煩，保持健康（庫里，勒布朗）。這甚至都還沒有提到高清的轉播，24小時可得的錄像，更深的天賦池，以及你能夠在任何時間任何地點觀看比賽的條件。

While we』re waiting for the Finals to start, I thought I』d share some of the interesting tidbits I have observed in my 20 years of following the league. Maybe some of the older hoop heads on /r/nba can add on to this list as well. Likewise, I』m also curious to hear about what some of the younger fans think about what I have written below.

For context, I started watching the NBA in the middle of the 1997-1998 season. If the stories seem Kobe/Shaq/Vince-centric, its because the Raptors and the Lakers were my favourite teams growing up.

Narratives are often re-written by players and analysts as the years go by

When Kobe and Shaq were playing together, the narrative was that Kobe piggybacked Shaq to a ring, and that Shaq carried the Lakers. The thought back then was that any of the other elite SGs (McGrady, Iverson, Carter) could also win 3 rings if they had prime Shaq on their team. Fast forward 17 years, and now we have people like Barkley (who was a vocal critic of Kobe 10 years ago) saying that Kobe was the one who carried Shaq to three rings.

Shaq likes to say nowadays that Nash robbed him of two MVPs in 2005 and 2006. While Shaq had a really good shot in 2005 (he was second in MVP voting), he wasn』t very good at all in 2006. In fact, he wasn』t even in the top 10 in MVP voting because he only played in 59 games and averaged 20/9. The actual MVP of that Heat team was D-Wade, who finished sixth in MVP voting that year. But Shaq likes to gloss over that part to boost his own narrative.

Fans tend to forget a lot…and winning changes everything

There was a period of 2 years (2004-2006) where Kobe was by far the most hated athlete in all of America. Of course, no one remembers this now, but he was pretty much booed in every arena during those two years. There were two specific reasons: his pending assault case, and the perception that he ran Shaq and Phil Jackson out of town. Over time, and with two rings, he turned from the most hated figure in the NBA to a mythical basketball icon who could do no wrong (especially in China). This same thing happened to LeBron, who I』ve seen go from hero to absolute villain (The Decision), and then back to the hero. I have feeling the same thing will happen with Durant.

Prime Shaq averaged 38 ppg and 17 rpg with 3 bpg in the 2000 NBA Finals across 6 games. As thin as his skin is, Shaq from 1999-2002 was by far the most dominant player I have ever seen in my entire life. I have yet to see someone that unstoppable in the playoffs.

Forgotten incidents over the last 20 years include Charles Oakley slapping Tyrone Hill over some unpaid debt, Gilbert Arenas bringing a gun to the locker room, the NBA trying out a new ball that everyone hated during the start of the 2006-2007 season, LeBron/Nike confiscating a tape of Jordan Crawford dunking on LeBron in a summer scrimmage, Shaq refusing to say Kobe』s name for 2 years, Shaq dissing Pat Riley on his way out of Miami, Shaq dissing Jerry Buss on his way out of LA, Shaq dissing Stan Van Gundy (notice a theme?), Lebron making fun of Dirk during the 2011 Finals, Carmelo appearing on a 「Stop Snitchin」 DVD telling people to stop snitching, Karl Malone hitting on Kobe』s wife and Kobe calling him out on it, Nas dissing Kobe in the song 「These Are Our Heroes」, everyone hating Vince Carter for refusing to give up his starting spot at the 2003 ASG to Michael Jordan, Mariah Carey』s Jordan dress at the ASG, Tracy McGrady jinxing himself by saying he was finally ready for the second round while up 3-1 only to lose in 7 games, Kevin Garnett getting rocked in the face by Anthony Peeler, etc.

People forget that Tim Duncan led the Spurs to an NBA championship in his sophomore year, without Ginobili and Parker. He won back to back regular season MVPs in 2002 and 2003. He averaged 24/17/5 with 5 blocks in the 2003 Finals. He won 5 rings but is literally never brought up in GOAT talks even though he has more MVPs, Final MVPs, and the same amount of rings as Kobe.

Advanced stats have completely changed the game

In 2001, Jerry Stackhouse averaged 30 ppg while shooting 40% from the field. In today』s league, he would be considered an inefficient chucker and would probably be criticized non-stop. Back then however, it was considered normal that he, Allen Iverson and others all averaged in the high 20s while shooting below 45%. Iverson, for example, won the 2001 MVP shooting 42% from the field. Nobody gave a crap about shooting figures as long as the shots were being taken by the best players.

Around 2008 however, with the rise of Lebron and with peak Kobe in full effect, is when the stats revolution began. Outlets like TrueHoop disliked Kobe and felt that based on advanced stats, he was an overrated and inefficient chucker who wasn』t very clutch. Meanwhile, Lebron, by advanced measures, was by and far the best player in the league (which at the time was not a popular opinion). This eventually evolved to things like TS% and other metrics being considered 「true」 stats of relevance among basketball fans.

Mike D』Antoni』s Seven Seconds or Less (SSOL) offense changed the league

You have to understand that before the SSOL Suns in 2004-2005, 90% of the league played a defense oriented game that was slow, methodical and isolation heavy. The SSOL Suns completely changed this and revolutionized the offensive side of the ball with their pace and space offense with smaller lineups (Amare at center, Diaw at PF) and crisp passing.

This eventually evolved into the Heatles playing small ball in their prime (Bosh at center, Lebron at PF), which eventually evolved in the 2014 Spurs running a clinic on pace and space to beat that same Heat team. In 2017, if your team doesn』t play pace and space basketball, its now considered bizarre (see: Knicks trying to instill the Triangle).

Each generation believes they』re looking at the GOAT

When I first started watching the NBA, MJ was the unquestioned GOAT and anyone who dared mentioned Kobe, Duncan, and others were virtually shut down. Fast forward 20 years and now the narrative among fans is starting to skew. Saying MJ is the GOAT over LeBron is now a debate rather than a foregone conclusion because fans are writing about how MJ had hall of fame help, worse competition, time off for retirement, etc. While these may or may not be true, the fact that MJ』s accomplishments are now being downgraded to boost LeBron is something I never thought I』d see.

This is the best the league has ever been

I know a lot of people on here look back fondly at whatever time they started watching the league. For me, I have fond memories of Allen Iverson, Vince Carter』s 360s, and Frobe. But once in a while I will go back and actually watch some of the games from the early 2000s and realize that we are truly living in a golden age of NBA basketball.

The NBA back when I started watching was a lot of post play, isolations, and terrible field goal percentage. The 2003-2005 era in particular was a weird time because the Pistons and Spurs were grinding teams to a halt with scoring dipping to the 70s and 80s. Off the court as well, a lot of superstars were constantly getting in trouble (AI, Jason Kidd"s domestic abuse case, Kobe"s case, etc.).

Nowadays however, the game is all about speed, pacing, passing, and wholesome superstars who stay out of trouble off the court (Curry, Lebron). This isn』t even without mentioning the HD coverage, the 24/7 clip availability, a deep talent pool, and the fact that you can watch games anywhere and anytime.

(I actually agree with everything said here, although I would point more to the elimination of hand-checking and allowing zone defense to changing the game than the 7SOL Suns.)

I see you didn"t comment on any rule changes in the league. Hand-checking (although I see a lot of hand-checking still), illegal defense and defensive 3 seconds, 10 seconds to 8 seconds to clear half court, delay of game after made basket.

I think all of these helped create the league that we have today, a faster more flowing game!

我看到樓主並沒有對聯盟中任何的規則改變做出評價。Hand-check的取消（儘管我現在還能看到很多的hand-check），違規防守的確定，以及防守3秒，10秒過半場縮短到8秒，在進球後拖延比賽等等。

I thought the tim duncan>kobe thing was interesting because it reminds me of how kareem>mj but no one gives kareem that credit either really. That"s because I think kobe and mj are more entertaining.

I also have to think deep down (deeper for some than others) we all understand talking about who the best all time is is extreme nonsense.

Duncan is considered the greatest PF of all time, the idea that he is underrated is laughable. It"s true he isn"t very popular, but I"ve never seen anyone question his greatness.

Nice post, great read. There are probably too many incidents or narratives to ever cover all of them haha.

Edit: one thing I would say is the triangle and pace and space are not mutually exclusive many teams do still run it gsw/spurs

Had LeBron not returned to Cleveland, instead staying in Miami or going any where else, I think the majority of the league fans would still greatly dislike him. I don"t believe it"s a given Durant returns to good favor. A lot will depend on where he goes, if anywhere, after GS while in his prime. And if he wins and keeps winning.

如果勒布朗沒有回到騎士，而相反留在了熱火或是去了其他的地方，我認為大多數的球迷仍然會非常的討厭他。我不認為杜蘭特會回到輿論好的一面是既定事實，這很大程度上會取決於仍在巔峰的他在勇士合同結束後選擇去哪裡打球，以及他是否能在現在以及未來一直贏球。
