He was also an excellent player, he just had the "misfortune" of playing out the prime of his career as the 5th starter on a team with 4 Hall of Famers. That severely hamstrung his stats and his legacy gets really overshadowed because of it.

Ainge is a guy I really would have liked to see play in the modern NBA - he was a deadeye shooter from deep before the league appreciated the 3-ball. If he played today he"d be hoisting up a Curry-like 10 3"s every game.

It shouldn"t be too surprising that a professional athlete would excel at other sports ... but what is interesting is that of all the Boston players in the 80s, Ainge was probably the last person people would think would lead be the Celtics GM one day. Bird went home to Indiana, and McHale did the same and went to Minnesota. Ainge was a good player but his career pales in comparison to Bird an McHale, but he"s proven to be the better GM though

people don"t realize the hardest thing to do in professional sports is hit a baseball, its not about physical talent, its about skill, endless repetition & hand eye coordination. No one just picks up a bat out of nowhere and knows how to correctly hit a ball
