這部電影是夢露最受歡迎和評價最高的作品（已經躋身於世界影史喜劇經典之最，被譽為「喜劇聖經」，這部電影的技巧被後世很多導演模仿和膜拜，如《寶貝兒》，但至今無人超越），也是她票房最高的作品。好萊塢影評人將這部作品視為夢露畢生事業的巔峰之作，同時，也是在世界各種頂級電影排行榜上唯一能夠次次上榜的夢露電影。夢露也憑藉這部出色的電影獲得了她演藝生涯中的最高肯定：金球獎最佳喜劇女主角。
夢露

全世界幾乎每個人成長過程中
都或多或少見過她那些著名的照片，
並記憶深刻：
那張穿著白色裙子在紐約大街上，
裙子被地下熱氣吹得張開了喇叭的黑白照；
那張面對鏡頭兩眼微闔、雙唇微翹的；
在沙發上裸露那雙美腿的……
這些照片不再是照片，
而成了一種特殊情感的傳達，
一種純真性感的定格。
對幾代人來說，
夢露就像這些照片，
是永恆的定格。
1945年，當時還叫諾瑪·簡的夢露成為一名降落傘工廠的檢驗員。在一次偶然中，攝影師發現了她的外貌，希望將她的照片刊登出來用以鼓舞美軍。不久，她搬出了婆婆的家，並與一位模特兒經紀人簽約，後者引薦她與二十世紀福斯公司簽訂第一份演出合約。首先是一部二流影片《Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!》中飾演一個鬨動教堂的女孩，但是只有一句台詞。之後她又扮演一個坐在賽艇上的女孩，但是大部分鏡頭都被刪除，只留下一個長鏡頭。
往後的幾年間，夢露的星途尚未有長足的進展。1948年12月31日，在一場晚會上，夢露邂逅了威廉·莫利斯事務所的合伙人約翰尼·海德，由於海德的極力推薦，瑪麗蓮演出了兩部成名作：《夜闌人未靜》和《彗星美人》。
1949年5月27日，攝影師湯姆·凱利為夢露拍攝了數張裸體照片，用以出版金色夢幻小姐月曆，後來，這些裸照被登在《花花公子》的創刊號上。據夢露在《我的故事》中的回憶，當初她這麼做完全是因為很窮。儘管當時還未有花花公子女郎的說法，但是夢露已經被公認為第一位花花公子女郎。
1951年下半年，福克斯公司確信夢露極具發展潛力，提供她在大銀幕的發展空間。到了1954年，夢露已經主演了《紳士愛美人》、《願嫁金龜婿》和《娛樂至上》等影片，成為當時最耀眼的女明星。但是她對達利·扎努克設計的美女角色感到乏味。於是她解除了合約，前往紐約藝人工作室(The Actor s Studio)學習演藝。她與攝影師密爾頓·格林合作成立了自己的製片公司，拍攝了大獲成功的《七年之癢》。然而在當時整個電影產業的發展過程中，夢露的事業也起伏不定。之後夢露拍攝的《游龍戲鳳》就遭到了挫折。接下來她拍攝了喜劇片《巴士站》。
1962年5月，夢露在肯尼迪總統的生日晚宴上獻唱了《總統先生，生日快樂》。當晚她所穿的法國薄紗裙在之後被佳士得以創紀錄的130萬美金拍賣成功。夢露在即將完成《愛是妥協》一劇的時候，因為緋聞事件被福克斯公司再次解僱。此後夢露的生活較為黯淡。
1962年8月5日，夢露在洛杉磯布萊登木寓所的卧室內被發現已經去世，終年36歲，一代傳奇性感女星的人生從此划上句號。
