Sterling was hit at 2am last night when the bank of England released trade figures which indicated a sluggish start to the year for British industry.A fall in earnings in the retail, manufacturing and financial services sectors hace contributed to a five year low in confidence in British industries, which is now reflected in foreign exchange prices.

When trade figures hit uncertainty button, it is typical see either stagnation on exchange rates or a deterioration in the sterling s value so the risk today is still very much held by anyone holding sterling and wishing to buy a foreign currency.

As trade figures have been down in Europe as well, we should see more of a negative effect when it comes to sterling/dollar trading.

The resurgence in the fate of US industry has poor foreign exchange implicatons for the UK.

Similar dips have plateaued quickly when the government provides assurances to the market, however, this may be a case of too little too late, Unless the Chancellor is able to come up with something compelling to tell traders, sterling is likely to continue to fall.

Readers may wish to note, however, that current buying levels can be fixed in place for a future requirement, using only a small deposit, thereby fixing the transaction and eliminating any risk from further currency exchange movements.
