About Jason Hackenwerth:「I knew there was something there, I just didn』t know what.」

On a whim, I staged an impromptu art installation, attaching 100 balloons to a subway station ceiling and watching what resulted. 「People were fascinated,」 he said. 「I knew there was something there, I just didn』t know what.」

From those humble origins, Hackenwerth has gone on to create huge balloon sculptures for the Hong Kong Art Fair, Art Basel in Miami, the National Museum of Scotland, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and many other prominent sites.Mathematics plays a big role in his work. 「I』m working in exactitudes, and these materials aren』t exactly designed for that.」His creations, like 「Quadropus,」 look like fantastical creatures, but Hackenwerth doesn』t consider imaginary animals to be the point of his art. 「It』s really about a form. It』s about the curve.」

one of the things about balloons is that they are very compelling. Everyone』s attracted to balloons. Your hair is attracted—when I work on balloons in the studio everything wants to attract to them, they have so much static attraction. On some level they have that effect on people, the way that they are compelled. When I use them, they are warm and inviting and people want to imagine themselves in there. And so if I can capture people』s imagination for just long enough and just stop them for a minute from the daily routine and just think about nothing except for the potential for discovery.
