敦刻爾克：那些名垂青史的英語演講，都是極好的學習素材
最近被諾蘭的新片《敦刻爾克》刷屏了吧？剛剛在電影院看完《敦刻爾克》，今天就要和大家分享一些和這部電影有關的英文。

Dunkirk
片名《敦刻爾克》的英文是Dunkirk，英國人習慣把它的重音放在後面（電影中讀的就是/d?n k?:k/），美國人一般會把重音放在前面，讀成/ d?nk?rk/。推薦大家一個標註名字音標和示範發音的網站：http://www.pronouncenames.com

Mole
影片一開始出現了一個小標題The Mole。我的第一翻譯是「那顆痣」，我盯著這哥們看了半天，確實有顆痣...
對於一個不熟悉二戰歷史的美國人來說，看到這個詞，他可能會想到它的另外兩個意思「鼴鼠」和「間諜」。如果你看過電影了，一定記得有這樣一幕：在一艘擱淺的船中，為了減輕重量讓船浮起來，船上必須下去一個人。有人懷疑其中的一個人是德國間諜（其實他是法國兵），非要讓他下船。另外，這個法國兵是換了英國兵的衣服才混上船的，mole可能也是這個意思。
mole在電影中表示「痣」和「間諜」只是我的個人猜想，這個詞在這裡的實際意思是：「防波堤」, 英文解釋是:A mole is a massive structure, usually of stone, used as a pier, breakwater, or a causeway between places separated by water.

瓮中捉鱉
電影中有這樣一段對話：
The enemy tanks have stopped.
Why?
Why waste precious tanks when they canpick us offfrom the air likefish in a barrel?
眼看德軍坦克馬上全殲盟軍的時候，希特勒下了一個至今都匪夷所思的命令：停止進攻。具體原因不詳，電影中給出的解釋是德國想用飛機投彈，以最小的犧牲換取勝利。
這段話中我們可以學到兩個表達：pick off和fish in a barrel.
pick off在這裡指的是to aim and shoot someone，飛機瞄準目標，射擊或者投擲炸彈，一個一個放倒。fish in a barrel 我想是來自英語習語「shooting fish in a barrel」，表示「易如反掌」 「得來全不費功夫」，電影字幕譯為「瓮中捉鱉」。

丘吉爾的演講
電影最後出現了丘吉爾的一段演講，他的話給了士兵們莫大的安慰和鼓舞。這段演講的標題是We Shall Fight on Beaches，電影中出現了下面這段節選：
Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule,we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God』s good time,the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.
歐洲大片的土地和許多古老著名的國家，即使已經陷入或可能陷入秘密警察和納粹統治的種種罪惡機關的魔掌，我們也毫不動搖，毫不氣餒。我們將戰鬥到底。我們將在法國作戰，我們將在海上和大洋中作戰，我們將具有愈來愈大的信心和愈來愈強的力量在空中作戰；我們將不惜任何代價保衛我們的島嶼。我們將在海灘上作戰；我們將在敵人登陸地點作戰；我們將在田野和街頭作戰；我們將在山區作戰；我們決不投降。即使這個島嶼或它的大部分被征服並陷入飢餓之中，這是我一分鐘也沒有相信過的，我們在海外的帝國臣民仍要英國艦隊的武裝保護之下，繼續戰鬥，直到新世界在上帝認為適當的時候用它全部的力量和能力，來拯救和解放這箇舊世界....
看到這裡我的眼睛濕潤了，我的第一反應是：這TM和大學《高級英語》中背過的那篇好像啊！《高級英語》第一冊第五課就是丘吉爾的一篇演講Speech on Hitler s Invasion of the U.S.S.R.，不過那是在敦刻爾克大撤退一年後，當德國入侵蘇聯時（1941年）發表的。摘錄一段大家感受一下：
From this nothing will turn us – nothing. We will never parley; we will never negotiate with Hitler or any of his gang.We shall fight him by land, we shall fight him by sea, we shall fight him in the air, until, with God s help,we have rid the earth of his shadow and liberated its peoples from his yoke.
除了林肯的《葛底斯堡演說》（Gettysburg Address），建議大家背上一兩段丘吉爾的演講。不背的話也要至少讀上個100遍，如果你是英語專業的話，要求高一點，要一字不差地背下來哦 -- 儘管很快你就會像我一樣忘得一乾二淨。

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
八十七年前，我們的先輩們在這個大陸上給我們帶來了一個新的共和國，她受孕於自由的理念，並獻身於一切人生來平等的理想。
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
但是，從更廣泛的意義上來說，不是我們奉獻了，聖化了，神化了這塊土地，而是那些活著的或者已經死去的、曾經在這裡戰鬥過的英雄們使得這塊土地成為神聖之土，它們遠超於我們的力量來使其神聖增減一分。世人不會注意，也不會記住我們在這裡說什麼，但是它們永遠無法忘記那些英雄們的行為。這更要求我們這些活著的人去繼續奉獻那些英雄們為之戰鬥的未盡事業。我們應該在這裡把自己奉獻於仍然留在我們面前的偉大任務——要從這些光榮的死者身上汲取更多的獻身精神，來完成他們已經完全徹底為之獻身的事業；我們要在這裡下定最大的決心，不讓這些死者白白犧牲——要使這個國家在上帝保佑下得到新生——要使這個民有、民治、民享的政府永世長存。
