如何一眼識別otherwise的意思

在詞典中，針對「otherwise」有非常複雜的解釋，對於otherwise不僅有比較多的詞性分類，並且不同的詞性下卻具有相似的含義，最終導致大家在閱讀中見到otherwise時，它的含義往往是憑藉「語感」憑空猜測得到的。其實在GRE閱讀中，otherwise的含義真的沒那麼複雜。

在閱讀中理解otherwise只需要先判斷otherwise在本句話中的成分，再根據是否充當賓語即可得到單詞的含義。具體成分與詞義的對應如下：

1.充當動詞賓語→「something else」「別的東西」；

2.沒有充當動詞賓語→「按照其他的方式/在其他情況下」；

3.「or otherwise」或「and otherwise」→與前面的詞取反。

例1

In physics, subject and object were supposed to be entirely distinct, so that a description of any part of the universe would be independent of the observer. The quantum theory, however, suggestsotherwise, for every observation involves the passage of a complete quantum from the object to the subject, and it now appears that this passage constitutes an important coupling between observer and observed.

【解釋】suggest是及物動詞，因此判斷otherwise在這裡作動詞賓語，於是代入something else之意得到本句話的含義。

【翻譯】在物理學當中，研究的主體和客體被認為是完全分開的，因此對於宇宙任何部分的描述都與觀察者無關。然而，量子理論，卻表明了別的東西，因為每一次觀察都包含一個完整的量子從客體到主體的通過，並且現在看來這種通過構成了重要的觀察者和被觀察者之間的聯繫。

First, the Handlins cannot adequately demonstrate that the White servant』s position was improving during and after the 1660』s; several acts of the Maryland and Virginia legislatures indicateotherwise.

【解釋】otherwise在此處同樣為賓語，處理方式同上。

【翻譯】首先，Handlins不能夠充分的證明1660年代期間及以後白人僕人的地位得到了提升；馬里蘭州和弗吉尼亞州的一些法案表明了另外的情況。

I must emphasize that I am not making a plea, disguised orotherwise, for the exercise of illusionist tricks in painting today, although I am, in fact, rather critical of certain theories of non-representational art.

【解釋】or otherwise固定搭配，與前面詞取反，翻譯成「不虛偽的」。

【翻譯】我必須強調我今天並沒有給魔術師的繪畫戲法找虛偽的或不虛偽的借口，儘管實際上我對於非寫實主義的藝術的某些理論持有批評態度。

例4

It [Anti-Vietnam War Movement] was supported by many whootherwiseopposed public dissent.

【解釋】otherwise是副詞，沒充當賓語，翻譯成「在其他情況之下」。

【翻譯】它（反越戰運動）被很多在其他情況下會反對公開不滿的人所支持。

註：otherwise不作賓語時，表示「以其他的方式」還是「在其他情況之下」，需要具體語境來理解。比如例4中的otherwise如果翻譯成「以其他方式」，則表明這些人一邊可以支持反越戰運動，另一邊又能同時反對運動，但他們不可能同時做兩件截然相反的事，所以不能理解成「以其他的方式」。

總結

1.見到otherwise，先判斷它所充當的成分，若是賓語，則翻譯成「別的東西」，否則翻譯成「按照其他的方式/在其他情況下」；

2.固定搭配「or otherwise」或「and otherwise」，此處的otherwise詞義與前面的詞取反
