A Harbor of Time
What comes and goes, you never know
Time is a frame-by-frame farewell without regression
Do memories never stay,
or do the years never find their rest?
If a film shall walk the miles of a lifetime
It is almost a coincidence that the filmCinema Paradisocaptures me with its director Giuseppe Tornatore, who has also directed one of my all-time favoritesLa leggenda del pianista sull"oceano(The Legend of 1900).
Somehow tinged with a lingering sentiment of nostalgia, the filmCinema Paradisois so naturally framed that even within a compacted two hours, one shall be able to obtain vicarious fragments of his own life in this magnificient, moreover profound work.
Late in the 1940s after WWII, Cinema Paradiso on the island of Sicilia, Italy, was the only access to which each and every local family had in escaping from all the stresses and strains of post-war traumas by seeking temporary solace from the sweets and bitters of films.
Six-year-old Salvatore (nicknamed Toto), son of a war widow, discovered his love for films in Cinema Paradisso where he first met the cinema projectionist Alfredo, who early in Toto"s boyhood, imparted him the knowledge of cinema projection as his best fatherly friend.
Each film in the cinema however, was censored by a local priest who ordered Alfredo to edit out any scene of a romantic kiss or embrace. Out of curiosity, Toto had always wished to collect the films of missing scenes but was impeded by Alfredo who asked him to leave the films in the cinema.
Just as every teenage boy would dream of epic romance, Toto, in his adolescence, accidentally captured his first love Elena with his video recorder - it was as if the girl was heaven-sent and there was no possible way for Toto to contain his feelings for Elena.
Somehow perplexed by this desired romance, Toto heard from Alfredo the story of a soldier who in agreed promise of love, had been waiting under the balcony of a princess for 99 days but left on the 99th night, a day away from winning the princess over. As eager as Toto was to know the reason for the soldier"s decision, the answer failed him.
So in all weathers, the young man kept waiting every afternoon under Elena"s balcony in expression of his heartfelt loyalty, yet to no avail. Just when Toto was drown in such desperation that he had torn all the calendar pages into pieces, he heard Elena whispering his name at his back as she walked into the projection room and reached Toto in acceptance of the young man"s persevering fervor.
The two love birds clang to each other all the way to the height of summer, where they left footprints up the bumpy hills, down the shady valleys, and in the undulating fields.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer"s lease hath all too short a date.
——William Shakespeare
When the wild summer was close to end, Toto learnt from Elena"s letter of her moving to another city for college.
Sleepless days and nights in the sweltering heat of July, like a spellbinding chapter unfinished, were there but to seize the mind of a young man who, worn out from waiting, was desperately desirous of a storm to extricate his withering soul. Finally, the storm Toto had hankered for came.
Toto, however, had lost touch with Elena, ever since he came back from military service in a year. The idyllic, at times torrid summertime had gone, like a dandelion caught in a light breeze, and slipped through the young man"s grasps like grains of sand; no matter how hard he tried to cup his hands, the tiny particles of time seemed to slip through the cracks, collecting in a vortex of memories.
Somehow abandoned by his beloved girl and confined alone to the daunting prospect, Toto was so completely consumed with a sense of deflation that even blind Alfredo could tell from his unassured voice.
——Alfredo
Living here every day, you think it"s the centre of the world, that nothing will ever change. Then you leave, for a year or two, and when you come back everything is changed. The thread is broken. You don"t find what you"re looking for. What was yours is gone. You need to go away for a long time... for many years... before you can come back and find your people, the land where you were born.
Life is not what you see in films. Life is much harder.
The young man boarded the leaving train, and at the mercy of time, did not come back to town in 30 years and with no phonecalls or letters, until the death of Alfredo came as a thunderbolt, awakening middle-aged Roman director Salvatore with a spasm of melancholy - there was but a dreadfully long stretch of time.
Thirty years away from home, in a city with no hometown acquaintance in sight. As Salvatore, in retrospection, traveled back to the home village, his room was already neatly decorated just as it was thirty years ago. For a second, the photos on the walls and the ways how things were arranged would make one realize how adept mothers are at storing memories in a child"s room.
We, as viewers of Cinema Paradiso, shall more or less find fragments of our own lives in this audio-visual feast.
There has alwaysbeen such an old place in town
where loads of memories dwell, and you, in helplessness, shall never be too ready to see it off in flying dusts with the changing of age and time.
There has always been someone who loves you like a father, though you and this person might not share a bond of kinship.
There has always been a moment of solicitude
where you find every departure from homeland hitherto a distant journey with no turning back.
There had always been a person
who inadvertently tempted you in youthful years which had been uneventful til then.
There has always been a summer
which lingered in your reverie
even when that summer had long gone.
The belated gift from Alfredo might as well be the highlight and climax of this film, where Toto"s childhood promise was exquisitely kept. Romantic kisses and embraces perfectly embody child Toto"s pursuit for the pure beauty of love, a part that had been missing due to the absence of Toto"s father who was killed in war. Yet for young Toto, his fervent romance with Elena, again ended up unsettled when he lost touch with Elena after military service.
Some would argue that what Alfredo should encourage Toto to do by then is to find Elena instead of leaving the town for a new life. As a fatherly role in Toto"s life, what Alfredo hoped for Toto was, nevertheless, not to be confined in a cinema projection room for his entire life, but rather to chase after his own dream without looking back.
Sorry for the belated promise and sorry for the missing years would be all that Alfredo wanted to convey, after an approximate lapse of 40 years, through this special gift for Toto. When the film started to play, all black-and-white memories of Toto flashed back and merged into the flowing scenes of kisses, reminding him, after the trials of life throughout these elapsing years, of the immortal paradise of love he had yearned for deep down as a child.
Memories are never effaced;
they shall only be pieced together,
just as what a film editor would always do with films.
Life is not what you see in films.
Life is much harder.
In making a film so grand as life, sometimes you have to be so determined as to cut and let go of homies, and your family and love at large.
Yet one could still be an editor of his or her own life,
one who is grateful for the extant pieces and holds on to the belief that somewhere in life, there would be a moment of miracle when the missing pieces shall in one way or another, find their way back to you.
