「What was the happiest moment every day during your business trip?」
「When the parking lot was empty and all the buses were sent out.」
It was freezing cold in December, the San Francisco Bay Area. The hotel I lived in was well decorated for the coming Christmas. At 4:00am, it was raining, dark and empty on the streets. The whole city was in a deep sleep. A dim light pierced the darkness from a BYD service vehicle, in which I was driving at leisure, heading to the parking lot of Stanford University. The heater was on in the 25 minutes』 drive, since I could not stand the cold outside the windows. 「The spare parts ordered yesterday have arrived. If they get replaced, all the buses can be sent out today,」 I thought to myself.
There was a familiar feeling when I arrived and saw the buses standing side by side in the darkness. The rain was pattering on each bus. With a raincoat on, I started them one by one to record the mileage, examine the vehicle state and look through the logbook.
After finishing the work, I rang up my colleagues of the vehicle operation department, 「All the buses are ready to go.」
「Got it. Thank you so much,」 They replied.
Then I turned to Mike, an American colleague by my side, and said, 「Time to head to Facebook now.」
「OK. Let』s go!」 Mike said, 「You should take a nap. I heard you were on a meeting at twelve last night.」
「Yes. Our domestic team needs to know more details about our buses here, and I just want to tell them all I know.」
When we arrived at Facebook, most C6Ms have been sent out. I happened to meet Jason, a Facebook employee in charge of on-site vehicle dispatching. 「You are lucky, man. We have free breakfast this morning,」 He said to me, 「Let』s go!」
I selected something to eat and a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, sat down and chatted with Jason in the dining hall. Regaining my strength from the meal, I felt warmer and went out to the last C6M. A new day began.
It is the epitome of our work. After-sales engineers in America need to assist clients to dispatch our vehicles and make records early in the morning, take charge of inspection and maintenance when recharging vehicles and ordering spare parts in the daytime, and sort out maintenance records as well as share with colleagues in the evening. At that time, I felt I was a 「doctor」 who 「diagnosed」 the vehicles through a 「stethoscope」, figured out 「appropriate treatment」, made a record and kept an archive to analyze the 「incidence」. The fulfilling life was demanding but interesting.
After work, we would relax ourselves especially during the holidays. A road trip is worth trying. America covers a vast territory with a sparse population and many places of interest and near Los Angeles there are Death Valley, Las Vegas, Yosemite, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Great Bear Lake, etc. When your heart is on the way, you will never stop. At our leisure, we would cook and dine together, during which our depression and homesickness would be taken away by the laughter.
It has been over three years since I joined BYD and became a member of America Auto Sales Division in 2014. From January to August in 2016, and from November to May in 2017, I have been on business trips to America and spent two Spring Festivals there. The experience mentioned above was during the second trip. It was a big challenge for any of us to serve our customers alone in a market without any partner around. When our family were celebrating the festival together, we were under the vehicle examining the chassis; when others were sleeping soundly, we were on top of the vehicle examining the air conditioner. Each of us may be the only figure in the curtain of darkness, but fortunately, none of us is really alone. When we need support, the strong and dependable team behind will never fail us. I believe that every team in BYD is the same, and team spirit is one of the reasons why BYD can get to where it is today.
Thanks to the joint endeavor of BYD people, our electric buses are running in many places. Some are in Denver』s shopping malls, some are operated by AVTA (Antelope Valley Transit Authority), and some are serving as shuttle buses in Stanford and Facebook. We are so excited to see them running on the roads in America. No pain, no gain. I will continue to fight with my team members, and always be with you, BYD!
