An A4 sheet of paper is one of the most widely used materials in daily life.
The latest sensation it has created is probably the "tiny waist challenge". This challenge has swept the internet, as women boast their slim waistlines by holding a white vertical sheet of A4 paper in front of their waists and posing for photograph.
I don"t know whether this artist has such a waist. Yet, I can assure you he has used the same sized paper sheets to do something much more challenging, creative and fascinating.
Danish artist Peter Callesen builds a theater for comedy and tragedy by simply cutting a blank white sheet of A4 paper.
He sculpts or folds the cut-out part into delicate shapes and installations.
Most of the time he puts these tiny sculptures back to the absent space left by the cut. The cut-outs and the negative spaces form a dramatic scene.
None of his works consist of more than one sheet of paper.
It can be a lakeside house soon to be smashed by two snow balls rolling down the mountain.
Or it shows people running for their lives as a fire presses on.
A tightly closed closet often disrupts your sleep in childhood: In darkness, you can"t help but fear those characters fromMonsters Inc.would jump out of the closet any minute and freak you out.
These amazing paper works of Callesen are now on show at his solo exhibition,White Worlds, at Danish Cultural Center inside Beijing"s 798 Art Zone through March 4.
Callesen"s paper cuts and sculptures explore the infinite possibilities in a common sheet of paper.
They arouse your imaginations. Looking at this empty boat, for example, you can"t help but picture what could have happened to its captain.
Consider the following work: Will the bird successfully suck the nectar from the flower?
Some of Callesen"s creations are inspired by Hans Christian Andersen"s fairy tales.
This work, titledThe Impossible Meeting, III, tests how familiar you are with Andersen"s stories.
It is adapted fromThe Steadfast Tin Soldier, which tells of a tin soldier"s love for a paper ballerina.
This work, which features a Chinese pavilion, reflects the relationship between traditional culture and modern development and was shown at the Shanghai Expo in 2010.
Callesen"s works show you how powerful a sheet of paper can be, when being transformed from two to three dimensions.
They also ignite a melancholic feeling — a fear these sophisticated, fragile things will collapse any time.
In Callesen"s words, "It only takes a sneeze to destroy one of these worlds."
