霍金：仰望星空，腳踏實地

相信今天大家的朋友圈都被這一條消息給刷屏了：

大家都在緬懷他的同時，可能除了知道他幾乎全身癱瘓，是本世紀最偉大的宇宙物理學家之外，了解並不多。

所以，今天我們結合BBC 的訃告(obituary: Stephen Hawking) 對他詳細的了解一下。

成就

與運動神經疾病做抗爭（battled motor neurone disease) 的霍金, 是他所處的時代中 最受推崇和最知名的科學家之一（one of the most respected and best-known scientists of his age）。

萬物理論

霍金的代表學說有：黑洞理論，奇性定理，量子宇宙論，宇宙膨脹說等等。

但是最出名的還是他的「萬物理論」(theory of everything)，這個理論認為整個宇宙根據一個非常明確的定律進化。(suggesting that the universe evolves according to well-defined laws.)

他認為「這一套理論能夠給我們很多問題以答案，諸如，宇宙如何開始，走向何處，是否有結束，且如何結束。如果我們找到了這些問題的答案，我們就真的知道上帝的意志了。」

"This complete set of laws can give us the answers to questions like how did the universe begin," he said. "Where is it going and will it have an end? If so, how will it end? If we find the answers to these questions, we really shall know the mind of God."

最少人讀過的暢銷書作者

霍金的代表作有《時間簡史》(A Breif History of Time)《果殼裡的宇宙》(The universe in a Nutshell)《大設計》(The Grand Design).

《時間簡史》，一本 宇宙學的入門讀物( A Brief History of Time -a layman"s guide to cosmology. ) 賣出了超過1千萬本, 但是霍金也戲謔道「是最少人真正讀過的暢銷書」。 可以說是非常的幽默了。(It sold more than 10 million copies, although its author was aware that it wasdubbed"the most popular book never read". )

因此，天性幽默的霍金(A man of great humour)，也變成了廣受歡迎的科普大使(a popular ambassador for science)，同時他也非常認真地確保普通公眾能夠非常容易地接觸到他的作品。(he was always careful to ensure that the general publichad ready access tohis work.)

為什麼要探索宇宙？

對於激發人們對宇宙的興趣和探索，霍金是不遺餘力的。因為他說：「我認為，地球上的生命承受著被滅絕的越來越大的風險，諸如突然的核戰，一種基因設計過的病毒或者其他危險。我認為人類如果不去向宇宙，就不會有未來。我因此特別想鼓勵公眾對外太空的興趣。」

"I believe that life on Earth isat an ever-increasing risk ofbeingwiped outby a disaster such as sudden nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus, or other dangers. I think the human race has no future if it doesn"t go into space. I therefore want toencourage public interest in space."

但是對於外星人，霍金也特別謹慎

在探索頻道的節目中，他說到我們很有理由相信在宇宙的什麼地方存在著智慧生命，但是他也警告道：外星人可能會掠奪地球的資源，然後就離開。

In a series for the Discovery Channel, he said it was perfectly rational to assume there wasintelligent lifeelsewhere but warned that aliens might justraid earth ofits resources and then move on.

疾病--運動神經疾病

青少年時期的霍金喜歡騎馬和划船(horse-riding and rowing)。但是當他大學畢業到劍橋繼續深造的時候，確被診斷出患上了一種運動神經疾病，會導致他完全癱瘓。(he was diagnosed with a form of motor neurone disease which was to leave him almost completely paralysed.) 他當時的醫生認為他還只能再活2~3年了( his doctors gave him no more than two or three years of life.)
