吉日兮辰良，
東皇太一穆將愉兮上皇。
撫長劍兮玉珥，
繆鏘鳴兮琳琅。
瑤席兮玉瑱，
盍將把兮瓊芳。
蕙餚蒸兮蘭藉，
奠桂酒兮椒漿。
揚枹兮拊鼓，
疏緩節兮安歌，
陳竽瑟兮浩倡。
靈偃蹇兮姣服，
芳菲菲兮滿堂。
五音紛兮繁會，
君欣欣兮樂康。
The Nine Odes - Dong Huang Tai Yi[1]
Great moment,
fortunate day,
To please you genuinely,
we come with grace.
Clattering the accessory jade,
the sword strikes so bright.
Jade mattresses we"re on,
placing blossoms in fragrance front.
Meat with orchid which we lay,
With wine and meal in osmanthus spice.
Level the drumstick and sing loud songs,
The rhythm』s yet leisure, slow and sound.
Yu and Se[2] are melodious;
and how beautiful are the dancers[3] in those dons,
The aroma fills fully up the space,
Five notes[4] played altogether,
Sincerely, to your health and gay.

對於中國古代楚地的百姓來說，春季是祭祀的季節。《九歌》由屈原所作, 是由祭祀曲目構成。而東皇太一是那時楚地百姓主要祭拜的神靈，也是天帝。這首詞就是用來讚頌他的，同時也記錄了祭祀時的壯觀場景。
For ancient Chinese in the region of Chu (close to today』s Hunan and Hubei), spring was the time for sacrificing ceremony.The Nine Odeswas written by Qu Yuan, and the compositions within were sung in highly organized ceremonies. Dong Huang Tai Yi was the main religious figure that people in Chu area offered sacrifice for. It was believed that he was in rule of the sky. This song was for the purpose of praising him, while describing the grand scene of the ceremony.
