lord of the flies，中文譯作《蠅王》，是英國作家、諾貝爾文學獎獲得者威廉·戈爾丁的代表作，是一本哲理小說。故事講述因為一次飛機失事，一群唱詩班的孩子流落到一座孤島上。從精誠合作到團體分裂，逐步升級到暴力爭奪生活資源和生產工具，直至無視生命殘殺同伴的故事。而這些行為實施者全部是兒童，所以顯得格外殘酷。
十數年的倫理道德價值觀念就像一朵蒲公英，叫野性的風一吹，便所剩無幾，找不見蹤跡。在人類的發展歷程中，向上的道路總是太曲折，向下的道路又總是太順遂，通過這本書讓你看清究竟是人性本善，或是人性本惡。

In the book the Lord of the flies, Golding uses symbols, characters and events to convey how without civilization, there would be savagery which shows the breakdown of civilization is caused by an inherent evil within all of the boys. One symbol that is used throughout the book is the mask. The mask allows jack and his fellow followers to let out their inner beast. The mask gives jack this ability where he is free to be as savage as he wants without being intimidated by civilization. Jack feels liberated and is no longer holding onto the self-consciousness. Another important symbol is the conch shell. Ever since piggy and ralph found the conch shell, it has represented civilization and authority. The conch shell gives whoever is holding it a sense of power that was not present before.

小說不厚，要聊起來卻有說不完的豐富內容。《殺死一隻知更鳥》是以一個小女孩的口吻寫的，作者是美國作家哈珀·李。故事發生在20世紀30年代大蕭條時期美國南部的一個小鎮，一家人的生活從父親為一名遭到誣陷的黑人辯護開始改變。文章沒有大力渲染不公而是讓讀者審視何為善良。女孩的口吻風趣幽默，舒緩懷舊的敘事筆調讓人放鬆，意外的結局讓人溫暖感動。朋友們，當學微積分或物理感到乏力的時候，這本書無疑是消遣放鬆的最佳選擇。

Why do people feel the need to be superior to others, no matter where they are in the social structure?
This cruel practice of prejudice, prejudging, is played out in abounding ways throughout all of Maycomb. People become blinded by their prejudicial thoughts. They lose sight of their humanity of others, and jump into assumptions and judgment. The families of Maycomb have been their for bountiful generations. The people that live there have assembled their opinions, right or wrong, about their neighbors based on behavior of the social class of their ancestors. Not much has forced, or even encouraged, them to think about or change their opinions. It is just the social norm. in the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, prejudice pervades the small town of Maycomb』s social society which proves how prejudice clouds the mind』s perspective, leading to blindness.
