The Democratic leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, said Tuesday that adding such a question would cause fear anddistrustindefenselesscommunities. She said it wouldworsen the lack ofrepresentation of some communities, and that those communities would beleft outfinancially.

Cruz added that, "a question on citizenship is a reasonable,commonsenseadditiontothe census.」 The Commerce Department said Monday that citizenship information will help the Justice Department enforce the Voting Rights Act. The law protects minority voting rights. It was signed into law in 1965. The department also said that between 1820 and 1950, almost every census asked some type of citizenship question.
