A clever little rat lived in a field next to a farm house. It often dodged the farmer and ate hismillet. The farmer tried to catch it many times to no avail. The little rat was very good at digging holes. Its holes were deep and long, with many exits. This was the safest home, it thought.

But one day , a puppy found the little rat』s home. It had to move quickly, right under a haystack. The haystack was warm and comfortable, but during the daytime a kitten was always sunning itself on the haystack. The little rat was too scared to go out in the daytime so it only sneaked out at night.

But the little rat felt silly hiding and sleeping all day , so on one bright evening , under the starry moonlight , the little rat decided to move again. This time , the little rat moved to a corner of a pigsty . Neither the kitten nor the puppy liked that corner of the pigsty , plus , there was so much uneaten food around.

However , after a few days , the little rat couldn』t bear the disgusting smell of the pigsty any longer . What was worse , the pigs always snored and the little rat could never enjoy a sound sleep. So it decided to move again .

This time , the little rat decided to move into the barn . The barn stored a variety of crops but rarely had any people coming in or out . It was safe and comfortable . What a nice place! Suddenly , one day , many people came to move the grains out bag by bag .「I have to move quickly as well , or it』ll be trouble if they find me here!」 The little rat thought.

This time , the little rat decided to move far from the farm house . It dug many holes under a big tree, on the mountain behind the farm house . Its tunnels were like a maze. The little rat was very happy about its new home. It didn』t have a lot of food , but it felt safe . The little rat might not need to move again.

與家長共勉：

小老鼠很聰明，選擇住在農夫田地里、稻草堆底下、豬舍、穀倉，一搬再搬，都離不開事物豐盛的農場，但也躲不掉危險的狗、貓和人類。最後，它終於下定決心放棄農場，搬到後山的大樹下，那裡雖然沒有充足的食物，可是安全多了，不必提心弔膽、躲躲藏藏，可以過著安穩自在的生活。

孩子的一生也和小老鼠一樣，面臨許多選擇。晚上要幾點睡覺？放學後先玩遊戲還是先寫作業？早餐選擇吃什麼？……各式各樣、大大小小的選擇，和小老鼠一樣，背後都有它的道理，不一定有絕對的對或錯。

小老鼠一開始為了食物，選擇住在農場里，後來認為安全更重要而搬走，這是一段判斷和學習的過程，無關對錯。因此，當孩子做出某些決定時，父母不能急於去肯定或者否定。我們可以先試著了解孩子的想法和需要，和他一起討論是否還有其他選擇，每個選擇可能造成什麼結果。經過不斷的討論，我們可以更清楚孩子的想法和需要，可以教導孩子如何判斷和選擇，也可以養成他為自己負責的態度。每一個人都會隨著環境和時間的變化而不斷重新做出選擇，每一個人都必須具備做決定的智慧和勇氣！
