Lebanese Night

by Chris de Burgh with Mazikana Elissa

It was late in a Lebanese restaurant, in the heat of a Lebanese night,

There was dancing, people were singing, she came in from the garden outside,

And in her eyes I saw the stars,

And I felt something happen in my heart;

Then I knew I was going to meet her in the heat of a Lebanese night,

And the girl inside the woman, who came over to sit by my side,

And when she smiled, the whole world stopped,

It was then I heard the echoes of a child;

And did you go to your bed with a sweet lullaby,

And the sound of the guns in the night,

And did you dance in the fields,

did you run for your life,

From the hell that came down from the sky?

On a Lebanese night, on a Lebanese night;

We went down to the edge of the water, by the light of a Lebanese dawn,

And she told me all the stories of her beautiful land in the war,

Her tears fell down, the sun came up,

And I saw again the young girl in her eyes;

And did you go to your bed with a sweet lullaby,

And the sound of the guns in the night,

And did you dance in the fields,

did you run for your life,

From the hell that came down from the sky?

On a Lebanese night, on a Lebanese night;

All of my life, all I have known,

only a place where peace cannot go;

All over the world, the gift from before,

nothing is left for the children of war;

And did you go to your bed with a sweet lullaby,

And the sound of the guns in the night,

And did you dance in the fields,

did you run for your life,

From the hell that came down from the sky?

On a Lebanese night, on a Lebanese night;

On a Lebanese night, on a Lebanese night;

I will be waiting, in the Lebanon.

This is a song themed on anti-war by Chris de Burgh feat. Mazikana Elissa in de Burgh』s 2002 album 「Timing is Everything」.

Timing is Everything, 2002

Tuned in Arabic music, the song tells a romance of a European tourist falling in love with a Lebanese woman, and the woman telling him the stories of war on her motherland. Guns in the night, hell from the sky, all such nightmares are hard to imagine for one living in peace, but are the daily scenario for people who live in a land in the war.

Born on 15thOct 1948 in Argentina, Chris de Burgh is the son of a British diplomat, but he chose singing as his career.

Chris de Burgh

Chris de Burgh

With his high talent in music, de Burgh pursues his goal in both commercial and art fields.

Mazikana Elissa is a Lebanese singer who is crowned as 「Jewel of Lebanon」 and enjoys high popularity in Middle East.

Mazikana Elissa

A large amount of Lebanese are forced to leave their homeland due to continual wars. Thus there comes the phenomenon that the overseas population of Lebanese is bigger than that of domestic.

BTW, the chaos in Middle East is predestined with its deep root of European colonization in the region in 19c. Five Middle East Wars (1948, 1956, 1967,1973 and 1982), Iraq-Iran War, War against Iraq etc.

During the Cold War, Israel and the Arabica were the frontier of antagonism between the two ideological groups led respectively by the US and the former USSR. For always, the root is the contending by races and groups for lands and resources from as small as Jerusalem to as vast as thewhole Middle East.

In the gaming of powers, small countries and innocent civilians are always the victims.

Besides from the 5 Middle East Wars and the appalling atrocities (such as the 1982 Beirut Massacre) thereof, the attacks against civilians and refugees take place constantly till even today. The following are the photos of the ruins in Lebanon after the 1982 Middle East War, taken in 1992, and of the land today, taken recently. Courtesy toMr. Wissam from Syriafor the photos. Wish his country out of war asap and enter into the roadmap ofPEACE.
