1. 你沒聽說過Bank Holiday?

Bank holiday，銀行假日，銀行放假的日子，是the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland及其他commonwealth countries的節日。雖然名字是bank holiday，但是並不是只有銀行放假，現在bank holiday基本上可算是public holiday的同義詞（但是public holiday可不是只有bank holiday啊！）。

Bank holiday的歷史要追溯回1834年。當時，Bank of England 將33個宗教節日減少到了4個。它們分別是：1 May (May Day), 1 November (All Saints" Day), Good Friday (耶穌受難日，復活節前的星期五) 和Christmas Day (聖誕節)。

1871年，一位名叫約翰盧布克( Sir John Lubbock)的銀行家提出Bank Holidays Act 1871。該法案確立了為英格蘭，威爾士，愛爾蘭和蘇格蘭的幾個bank holiday：

Easter Monday

Whit Monday

值得注意的是，如Bank Holiday恰逢周末，則自動順延至周一放假。「If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a 『substitute』 weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday (gov.uk).」

另外，該法案沒有明確規定bank holiday是否為帶薪休假。「Bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave(gov.uk)」。而且根據公司，員工，僱主的情況bank holiday也有可能包括在年假中「An employer can choose to include bank holidays as part of a worker』s statutory annual leave(gov.uk)」。

後來，Bank Holiday越來越多。例如Spring Bank Holiday (in May), Summer Bank Holiday (in August)和Early May bank holiday。很多時候，Bank Holiday會連著周末一起放三天。
