黃賓虹（1865年-1955年），原籍安徽歙縣，出生於浙江金華。1886年，應縣試，補廩貢生。在揚州從陳崇光學畫花卉，在安慶從鄭珊學山水，後去蕪湖安徽公學任教，翌年在歙縣新安中學堂教書。1907年後居上海三十年。前二十年，主要在報社、書局任職，從事新聞與美術編輯工作；後轉做教育工作，先後任上海各藝術學校的教授。1937 年由上海遷居北平，被聘為故宮古物鑒定委員兼任國畫研究院導師及北平藝專教授。1948 年返杭州任國立杭州藝專教授。晚年任中國美術家協會華東分會副主席，中國美術家協會理事，被聘為中央民族美術研究所所長（因病未赴）。
他是一位大器晚成的大家，60歲以前師古人，70歲以後師造化，80歲以後畫藝大進，自立面目。他喜歡用焦墨和濃墨，根據多年的實踐，總結出"平、留、圓、重、變"五字用筆方法和"濃、淡、破、潑、焦、積、宿"七字用墨方法，具有很高的美術理論價值。他精通詩詞、篆刻、書法、文物鑒定、美術史等。他的畫從表現內容看，全憑筆墨功夫，使人百看不厭，越看越有內涵。
黃賓虹90歲壽辰時，被國家授予「中國人民優秀的畫家」榮譽稱號，有「再舉新安畫派大旗，終成一代宗師」之譽。1955年在杭州逝世。所藏金石書畫文物二千餘件及生前書畫作品五千餘件，全部捐獻國家。人民政府於杭州棲霞嶺建「畫家黃賓虹紀念館」。
