很奇妙的，讓我想起《後會無期》這首歌
聽張碧晨唱，有種穿越到木心《從前慢》裡面那個清晨的感覺
上次為了組織關於「俗語和成語」的英語角，去圖書館翻閱了一些關於英語諺語和俗語的書籍，之後還翻閱了一本隱喻詞典，做了一些積累。感覺很有趣，也很實用，記錄於此：
1.fools rush in where angles fear to tread
初生牛犢不怕虎，有經驗的人此時卻很謹慎
stupid persons do something without thinking about the risks involved while wise people would be careful and may not do it.
2. Full of hot air
吹牛，夸夸其談
What one says is not sincere, full of false claims and promises, not realistic
3.have a sweet tooth
喜歡吃甜食
to be particularly fond of sweet food
你看你這麼愛吃甜食，長的就很甜，估計牙齒都是甜的吧
4.have an ace in the hole
有別人不知道的錦囊妙計
to have an advantage which others donnt know
5.once bitten twice shy
一朝被蛇咬，十年怕井繩
an unpleasant experience makes one more careful in dealing with something or someone.
6.nest egg
節蓄下來的錢
an amount of money saved
7.talk to the hand
別煩我
別煩我啦，和你自己的手說話吧，自說自話去
8.one foot in the grave
半截身子入土了，風燭殘年
to be old enough or very ill and going to die very soon
一隻腳踏入了墳墓，已經距離死亡很近了
9.outside chance
沒什麼成功的機會
to have very little chance to succeed
10.pull a long face
愁眉苦臉
to look unhappy, sad
把臉拉長，眉毛也耷拉著，看上去就很沒有精神呢
11.put a bomb under someone
催促，使某人更迅速的工作
to make someone work faster
都把炸彈扔過去了，當然是希望那個人可以像炸彈一樣爆發，迅速完成工作啦
12.read the tea-leaves
預言未來
to foretell the future. Some people are able to read the pattern of the tea leaves at the bottom of the cup as a portent of future events
小時候經常看一些古裝劇，裡面有一些神人，比如什麼丞相啦、算命先生啦，就可以掐指一算預言未來。看來在國外，巫師們通過樹葉的紋路就可以預言了

大喜日子
a very important occasion. very successful and desirable time
就像結婚時的大喜日子裡，我們會貼紅雙喜一樣的感覺。
不知道為什麼這個短語總讓我想起一本書——《The scarlet letter》(譯名為 紅字)，看了簡介估計會很好看，忙完這段時間，打算花一段時間沉浸在閱讀中，嘻嘻
14.hair-raising
令人毛骨悚然，嚇得寒毛直豎
scary,frightening
很明顯，頭髮都嚇的立起來了。哈哈哈
15.milk and water
枯燥的講話或文字
some speech or writing which is boring。
缺乏生氣
weak and ineffectual
16.walk on eggs /walk on thin ice
如履薄冰，非常小心to do things warily and with great caution.
17.million-dollar question
重要而難答的問題

這個短語看釋義就很深邃，有種說不出的疏離感。英文裡面有很多這種含義豐富的單詞，尤其在背誦GRE單詞的時候會發現很多。
想起來初中時英語老師解釋miss，剛好那天又是下雨天，她在教室里說miss有兩個常用的含義，一個是「錯過」，一個是「思念」。「因為錯過，所以思念」
聽到最後這句話，一個坐在我後面的女生說「天哪，難得老師這麼文藝」於是，這個解釋，我一直記到現在

接下來的內容主要是關於一些俗語的來源，摘取自一本書（我忘記名字了……不過，確實是一本好書）
A blue streak
一閃而過的東西；連珠炮似的講話
①跑得像閃電一樣快（to go like a blue streak）,出現在1830年，據說當時郵車mail car跑得飛快，留下了一道藍色的身影，簡直像閃電lightning一樣。
②「連珠炮似的講話」，表示一個人說話滔滔不絕blatter /"bl?t?/，講得你的耳朵都快掉了（talk your ears off）
不知道為什麼，這個短語會讓我想起這樣的景象：

正確可靠
Edward cocker是17世紀英國著名數學家Mathematician，一連刊印了60版還供不應求are in short supply.人們相信按照他的辦法肯定不會出差錯。於是這句表達就有「按照精確的計算、正確無誤地」含義
Achilles』heel /?"kili:z/
致命弱點
這個典故出自荷馬史詩Homer"s Epic《伊利亞德》（Iliad）。Achilles是希臘聯軍中最英勇的一員猛將powerful generals。據說他出生不久，他的母親就提著他的腳後跟在冥河the styx中浸洗soak /sok/，讓他刀槍不入invulnerability /?n,v?ln?r?"b?l?ti/。可是沒有浸水的腳後跟heel成了他全身上下唯一致命的弱點。在特洛伊戰爭中，特洛伊王子就是靠放暗箭attack (sb.) in the back射中他的腳後跟殺掉Achilles的。

負心漢，薄情郎
Jason是希臘神話里的一位英雄，是希臘東部Thessaly王國的王子prince，但是王位crown/kra?n/被叔父篡奪seize。一位叫做Medea的公主princess冒著生命危險risk one』s life幫他取得王位。但是他成為國王之後，忘恩負義，拋棄了Medea公主，另娶他人
