對於拼音文字（alphabetic writing）的語言，語音在構詞中起著非常重要的作用。英語作為拼音文字，掌握英語字母的拼讀一般規則，對於英語作為非母語的語言學習者來說尤其重要。英語字母的拼讀難點是母音字母，因為母音字母只有五個（ＡＥＩＯＵ），而母音音素有二十個。母音字母在單詞中可以單個代表音素，也可以組合起來發一個音素。五個母音字母可以組合出以下十個雙母音字母組合。

一、Ａ字母組合（ao和ai）

１、OA 組合讀[?u] 例如：boat 、coat 、 road 、 download 、 goal

２、AI組合在重讀音節中讀[ei]例如：mail 、straight 、 train 、 afraid 、 wait 、 rain 、 painting 、pain 、fail

３、AI組合在非重讀音節中讀[?/i]例如：certainly 、 mountain 、 Britain 、 captain

４、AI組合讀[e]例如：again 、against

二、Ｅ字母組合（ee和ea）

１、EE組合讀[i:]例如：three 、、meet 、see 、 sheep、 between 、 sleep 、 week、 agree 、 free、 sweet

２、字母EA組合讀[i:]例如：please 、 teacher 、seat 、 clean 、speak 、 eat 、 meat 、tea 、cream

３、EA組合讀[e]例如: health 、 weather 、 ready 、death 、 already 、sweater 、 heavy 、head 、bread

４、EA組合讀[ei]例如: break、great

三、Ｉ字母組合（ie和ei）

１、IE組合讀[i:]例如：piece 、field 、 thief 、believe、relieve、achieve、

2、IE組合讀[ai]例如：tie 、die 、 pie 、lie

３、EI組合讀[ei]例如：eight 、seize、 weight

４、EI組合讀[i:] 例如：deceive 、 conceive 、perceive 、receive

四、Ｏ字母組合（oo和oi）

１、字母OO 組合讀[u:]例如：too 、 room 、 noon 、zoo、 noodle 、soon、 moon 、cool 、 pool

２、OO組合讀[u]例如：book 、 look、 good 、 cook、 wool 、 wood

３、OO組合讀[?]例如：flood、blood

４、字母OI組合讀[?i]例如：toilet 、 coin 、oil 、noise 、voice、 soil 、 point、 join

五、Ｕ字母組合(ou和au)

１、字母OU組合讀[au]例如：mouse、house、 trousers 、 about、 mouth 、 out、round 、 south 、loud

２、OU組合讀[?]例如：young 、country 、 trouble 、enough、encourage、 rough、 double

３、OU組合讀[u:/u]例如：you、 could 、 should 、 soup 、through

４、AU組合讀[?:]例如：daughter、 Australia 、 because 、 autumn 、 August、 cause 、pause 、audience

５、AU組合讀[ɑ:]例如：aunt、 laugh
