史蒂芬米切爾，美國人，1943年生於美國紐約布魯克林區，職業是翻譯家兼詩人。米切爾英文版的《道德經》譯作是所有英譯版中英文字數最少，句子結構最簡單的版本。據傳「詩仙」李白寫完詩後都會讀給無文化的老嫗聽，她們聽不懂的他就會改掉，這也是他的詩受人歡迎、流行甚廣的原因之一。與之相同，米切爾也採用了同樣的原則，從而使其譯文為大眾接受。
雖然很多評論說，站在中國人的角度，有些英譯文根本看不懂，但如果寬容點來看，小編以為它不僅不背離原作的精神本質，而且還能對現代社會產生現實的教化功用，當然也為那些不懂原文的人樂於接受。更何況，即使是普通中國大眾，也不一定能讀懂原版文言文《道德經》所闡述的真意。

第一章
道可道，非常道。名可名，非常名。無名天地之始，有名萬物之母。故常無欲以觀其妙；常有欲以觀其徼。此兩者同出而異名，同謂之玄，玄之又玄，眾妙之門。
譯文
Chapter 1
The tao that can be told
is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be named
is not the eternal Name.
The unnamable is the eternally real.
Naming is the origin
of all particular things.
Free from desire,
you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire,
you see only the manifestations.
Yet mystery and manifestations
arise from the same source.
This source is called darkness.
Darkness within darkness.
The gateway to all understanding.

第二章
天下皆知美之為美，斯惡已。皆知善之為善，斯不善已。 故有無相生， 難易相成， 長短相形， 高下相傾， 音聲相和， 前後相隨。 是以聖人處無為之事，行不言之教； 萬物作焉而不辭， 生而不有， 為而不恃， 功成而弗居。 夫唯弗居，是以不去。

Chapter 2
When people see
some things as beautiful,
other things become ugly.
When people see
some things as good,
other things become bad.
Being and non-being
create each other.
Difficult and easy support each other.
Long and short define each oter.
High and low depend on each other.
Before and after follow each other.
Therefore the Master acts
without doing anything
and teaches
without saying anyting.
Things arise and she lets them come;
Things disappear
and she lets them go.
She has but doesn"t possess,
acts but doesn"t expect.
That is why it lasts forever.

不尚賢，使民不爭；不貴難得之貨，使民不為盜； 不見可欲，使民心不亂。是以聖人之治， 虛其心， 實其腹， 弱其志， 強其骨。 常使民無知無欲。 使夫智者不敢為也。 為無為，則無不治。

Chapter 3
If you over-esteem great men,
people become powerless.
If you overvalue possessions,
people begin to steal.
The Master leads
by emptying people"s minds
and filling their cores,
by weakening their ambition
and toughening their resolve.
He helps people
lose everything they know,
everything they desire,
and creates confusion
in thosewho think that they know.
Practice not-doing,
and everything will fall into place.
