當代流行樂壇上有一支藝術生命力旺盛的搖滾樂隊，讓全球搖滾樂迷為之傾倒。這支樂隊碩果累累、戰績輝煌，迄今為止已獲得過八項格萊美獎，尤其在2009年的第51屆格萊美獎頒獎典禮上，樂隊憑藉專輯Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends一舉斬獲年度最佳歌曲、最佳流行樂隊/組合和最佳搖滾專輯三項大獎。這支樂隊有一個酷炫的名字——Coldplay (酷玩樂隊)。

Coldplay的第五張專輯Mylo Xyloto中的「Paradise」曾在英國單曲榜排名第一，成為該樂隊繼「Viva la Vida」之後第二首登上該榜榜首的單曲，也是當年英國最受歡迎的搖滾單曲。之後，歌曲「Paradise」還成為李安導演的電影《少年派的奇幻漂流》(Life of Pi)預告片的主題曲。

「哦，如果空中真有精靈，上天入地縱橫飛行，就請從祥雲瑞靄中降臨，引我向那新鮮而絢爛的生命！」德國作家歌德曾讓他筆下的浮士德這樣傾訴脫離塵世、飛向更高靈魂境界的強烈渴望。在歌曲「Paradise」中，Coldplay藉助歌詞中的「她」這個充滿隱喻色彩的形象也表達了同樣的願望。

歌詞中的「The wheel breaks the butterfly」一句化用了18世紀英國詩人Alexander Pope的詩句：「Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel? 」(是誰用車輪碾碎了一隻蝴蝶？)「她」就如同一隻美麗的蝴蝶，纖小而柔弱，也許逃不出被車輪碾壓的命運，卻仍然懷抱飛翔的夢想。

Coldplay的主唱Chris Martin在談到「Paradise」這首歌的主題時曾說：「『Paradise』 is about a girl really, the female half of the album, just about being a bit lost in the world and escaping through fantasy.」歌詞中的「她」代表了在世俗世界裡迷失的個體，儘管現實令人失望，但在夢想的天堂里游弋也是一種幸福，於是「她」懷抱對天堂的嚮往和憧憬，在堅守夢想的涅槃中獲得了新生。

為了表現這樣的主題，Chris Martin在MV中扮演了一隻被人類囚禁的大象。他渴望掙脫束縛，於是用石塊砸破囚籠的鐵鎖，一路狂奔，想盡辦法偷偷地乘上遠航的飛機，然後騎著獨輪車不畏艱辛地奔波，終於實現了自己回歸大自然的夢想。在廣闊無垠的草原上，旭日噴薄而出，這隻大象與其他同伴一起盡情高歌，發出對「天堂」的一聲聲吶喊。
