I am fasting these days

I amfastingthese days.前幾日聽到朋友這樣說，還以為他去跑步了…

其實fast這個詞當動詞的時候，有「禁食」的含義。

讓我們看一下維基百科給出的定義：

Fastingis the willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time.

禁食是一種一段時間內自願的遠離某種或一切食物、飲品或者兩者都不沾的一段時間的剋制或少用。

而CNN的英語新聞是這樣介紹：

(CNN) -- For the world"sMuslims,the festival of Eid al-Fitris a perfect conclusion to Ramadan -- the month-long period offasting and contemplationpracticed by observers ofIslamaround the globe. 伊斯蘭教教歷每年10月1日，即一個月齋戒期滿後開齋慶賀的日子。齋戒是紀念穆罕默德在傳教前每逢萊麥丹月（Ramadan是阿拉伯語炎熱的意思，即9月）都去麥加近鄰的希拉山澗沉思默禱，齋月為古蘭經降示之月（據經典記述，公元610年萊麥丹月27日夜，《古蘭經》降臨）

比如說：

《古蘭經》勸告人們在朝聖前齋戒，以作為一種補贖

當然除了宗教上的含義外，fasting也可以用於醫學方面。
