這些詞你都認識，但未必能看懂

或許你是一個在校生，天天揣一本辭彙書備戰四六級。又或許你已經工作，平時除了看美劇，已經很少接觸到英語了，某天突然重燃對英語的熱情，於是下個手機app，每天在朋友圈打卡今日記了多少個單詞。現在就來做一個小測試，以下幾個短語你能看懂多少。

是不是有種懵圈的感覺？要說這些單詞高中就學過了，大學四六級辭彙書都恥於收錄的。那麼我們把它們放回句子中，是不是好多了？

a 12.5% cut of the fees

我們知道cut在這裡是名詞。去查閱英文字典中cut作名詞的釋義，再結合上下文，可以確認cut在此處表示「提成」。

coming of age celebration

The coming of age celebration, held on the second Monday of January, falls around the time that many 18-year-olds are cramming for university entrance exams.

這句話和前面一句話出自同一篇新聞報道。講的是20歲的日本男女會在每年一月份的第二個周一舉行典禮慶祝成年，這個典禮就叫做comingof age celebration。如果日本把成年年齡改到18歲，這個時候大部分18歲的日本青年都在準備高考，就顧不上這個典禮了。

我們可以推測，coming of age celebration表示成年禮。因為一般英文字典都沒有收錄這個短語，我們去外網上試試。

果然，維基百科對coming of age 有解釋:

Coming of age is ayoung person"stransition from being a child to being anadult.

由此，我們可以確定就是成人禮。這個短語很有用處，古代的冠禮和笄禮就是coming of age celebration。

open-plan

這裡的plan和計劃沒有任何關係。open-plan 表示的是一種建築風格。字典中對其解釋為：

（of a building) with few interior walls

回到原文中，open-plan living room and dining room說的是客廳和餐廳連通。

hands-onparents

這個句子講的是英國的威廉王子夫婦希望每天都能接送喬治小王子上學放學。hands-on在字典中的意思是：

involving or offering active participation rather than theory

那麼，原文的意思可以確定為威廉夫婦在養育子女上親力親為。

背單詞就是學英語，幾乎成了國人的共識。我們背了十幾年的單詞，卻還是看不懂。辭彙書只列出了一個單詞最常用的含義，用另一個中文詞去做對應。但這個單詞可能有多個含義。即使同一個含義，在不同的上下文中對應的中文也不同。
