筷子

CHOPSTICKS

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE CHOPSTICKS APPROPRIATELY?

Before the Shang Dynasty, the chopsticks were invented by ancientChinese people. At the beginning, chopsticks were justused for cooking. Chinese people used chopsticks as eating utensils until the Han Dynasty. The first chopsticks, which were made of copper, were found in the Yin ruins located in Anyang City, Henan Province.

There are some taboos while using chopsticks. Here are some examples.

Don"t tap chopsticks on the edge of a bowl. It"s considered to be a way how beggars draw attention.

Don"t point chopsticks towards other people while talking to them over a meal. It"sconsidered to be a way to criticize someone.

Don"t leave chopsticks upright in a rice bowl. It"s considered to be a way to feed the dead peope, which often appears in a funeral.

Please make sure that chopsticks should be the same length and the ends are even.

BE A GOOD HOST

Dining culture is a dominant aspect of Chinese culture. Banquet is a common way to entertain guests, make friends and deepen friendships.

The host might has toorganize everything in advance, such as sending invitations, seating arrangements, ordering food, preparing beverages and drinks and handlingother things.

The host cannot be late. Before the meal starts, the hostshouldpropose a toast first. It"s a way to show the hospitality for the host to get the guest drunk or serve the guest some dishes with his or her own chopsticks. The host should always play an active role during the meal.

BE A GOOD GUEST

It"s no big deal if the guest is about ten minutes late. Don"t take the liberty of ordering any dish unless the host allows.

If the teapot is around, it"s better to serve others tea. It"s inappropriate if the spout of the teapot is facing anyone. The best way is to make it directly outward from the table.

If the guest doesn"t drink at all or cannot drink much, please tell the host in advance and avoid some embarrassing scenes.

Usually, dishes are shared communally while dining together here in China. The host might try to take care of the guest by serving some food. If the guest doesn"t really like it, just leave it alone.Sometimes the distinguished guest might be served a snapper"s shell or head by the host in some districts. Don"t eat anything before the host announces.

The honored guest is expected to make a toast after the host or before the end of the meal.

Fish symbolizes prosperity and wealth accumulation. Don"t turn over a fish or debone it. Superstitious people believe that it may bring bad luck. It"s better for the host or the staff in the restaurant to perform.

If the guest wants to use the toothpick after the meal, please hold a toothpick with one hand while using the other one to cover in front of the mouth.

Don"t split the bill with the host or offer to pay for everything. It"s rather rude to do so. It"s better for the guest to thank the host sincerely instead.
