當地時間18日，特朗普下令國防部組建獨立於空軍之外的第六軍種「航天軍」。

特朗普明確表示，組建「航天軍」的目標是確保美國在太空中擁有優勢。

"We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force: separate but equal, it is going to be something so important," he said.

美國現有五大軍種分別是陸軍、空軍、海軍、海軍陸戰隊和海岸警衛隊。新華社援引路透社報道，美國是1967年《外層空間條約》（Outer Space Treaty）的締約方之一。條約禁止在太空部署大規模殺傷性武器（weapons of mass destruction），只允許和平利用月球等天體。
