John Artman:

As Editor-in-Chief of TechNode, John Artman finds himself at the precipice of one of the most fascinating places of our times: the China tech scene.

The Beijing based American is at the axes ofmedia and technology,East and West, and is both aninsider and an outsiderin those contexts.

TechNode is TechCrunch』s Chinese partner, and reportsChinese tech news to an international audience. TechNode tries to balance instant reporting and analysis of tech trends. John』s criteria is simple yet crucial:「Do I learn something from this?」, and it』s this attitude which makes TechNode』s coverage such vital reading.

TechNode is incredibly active on the scene, as they should be, and I』m constantly running into them at events, big and small, from 50 people gatherings at Fuxing Zhong Lu naked Hub on a Wednesday evening to huge thousand people conferences in Seoul. The Friends of TechNode WeChat group is without doubt the most active and insightful Chinese tech community I』ve come across.

John sees technology as alens with which to look at society』s larger issues. Whilst interested in technology, John』s main interest is how technology companies conduct business and their impact on society itself.

We speak to John in the run up toTechCrunch Hangzhou, which on the2-3rd of Julypromises to be this year』s most exciting tech conference. With this year』s theme as 『Beyond Unicorns』TechNode promises to go back to its roots of looking at startups, and cutting edge tech trends.

What are your general thoughts on the Chinese tech scene at present?

I think it』s interesting how China』s tech field has prospered so quickly, and it』s not because of patents and research, but actually thehuge amount of capital and the investment-heavy culture. As far as I can see, there』s little technical innovation, butmore perfection of existing technologies, like Alibaba perfecting e-commerce. Unicorns come out of China because of the ready capital.

What do you think of this tendency of hot trends to quickly consolidate and investor interest to move onto the next hot topic?

There』s this constant heating and cooling down cycles. You』ll get everyone jumping onto a trend, with all sorts of obviously bad investments like shared umbrellas – but even when they fail, investors still gain relevant experience and user data, so it』s a learning process.

What do you think is the next big thing in technology?

Blockchain, definitely.Blockchain now is what the internet was in the 90s,and recognisably so. That』s why there are so many people trying to get into the industry. It seems to me that blockchain entrepreneurs are the tech guys who missed out on making Google and Apple, and so blockchain is their way of making their mark.We believe blockchain is so important that we』ve given it a whole two days at Hanghzou.

How do you keep up to date with the latest tech and news?

I try to use the latest apps and technology when I can, but ultimatelyI』m a lot more interested in learning about technology than using it.So I read a lot around the subjects of tech, a particular favourite of mine is theStratecherydaily newsletter by Ben Thompson, a Taiwan based American who』s somewhat of a KOL in Silicon Valley. I also like The Information, and we』ve podcasted with Shai Oster, their Asia bureau chief.

The Information.

Tell me about this summer』s TechCrunch Hangzhou Event

This year our theme isBeyond Unicorns, where we go back to looking at startups, because that』s what we』ve always been about anyway. That』s why we keep our ticket prices pretty reasonable at999 RMBper person which is comparatively low, especially given the opportunities and attendees.

Which startups are you most looking forward seeing at TechCrunch Hangzhou?

There are 2 really exciting startups, both in thepharmaceutical sector. One isNovoHeart, which using deep machine learning and genomics to grow fake organs. Another isRipple; they are one of the first blockchain companies to create a solution for a real problem.
