From 6 to 15 years old, most of us go to9 years compulsory education schools, study math, Chinese, English and several othersubjects. While, there is a special Chinese traditional education model calledShuyuan. Their teaching ways and study subjects are different with normalschools. Their students seem more creative, energetic and independent. Why isthis? In order to know the reason, I visited several Shuyuan and lived withtheir students. To make things clear, I will explain the daily schedule and thecontrast between shuyuan and normal school.

In shuyuan, students get up at 5:30 inthe morning. Then, they practice meditation or some basic Chinese KongFu Likebaduanjin to start the whole day. Normal school students get up usually at6:30.It is suggested that they do exercise but most of the time they hurry toschool. They don』t have time to do exercises. They have to arrive at schoolbefore 7: 30 to begin the morning reading. In Shuyuan, after morning exercise, they still have 1 hour to finish the daily routine of sanitation tasks. Nextstudy time is same, the contents and study ways are different. Shuyuan studentschant classics in morning reading time. What is chant? It is an interesting andeffective way of reciting. I』d like to show you. This is the first page ofdedaojing……

From 8:20 to 12:00, Shuyuan usually have2 subjects. Each subject has 2 classes. In the first class, students arerequired to study by themselves. In the second class, students ask the teacherquestions. If they don』t have questions, they will be asked by the teacheruntil they understand all questions. In normal school, they have 4 subjects, usually be taught by teachers.

In the afternoon, both of them have 3classes. Shuyuan studies focus on the art, PE or team work. Normal school use 2classes to continue study general knowledge courses, one or two classes tolearn art or PE.

In the evening, Shuyuan students onlyuse one and half hour to finish homework, because they have already finishedmost work in the class. Then they begin to read or make a team discussion orwatch videos. They go to sleep at 9.30 to 10. Normal school students usuallyhave 3 to 6 4subjects』 homework and they average need 3 hours to do homework. Theysleep usually at 11.00.

During weekends, Shuyuan students take astudy tour to explore the city and learn history and geography from the outdoorclasses. Most normal school students go to training schools to continue studygeneral knowledge courses.

As I am concluding, four points can belearned from ShuYuan』s education style

. First, good life and study habits arefundamental. Such as: enough rest, regular exercise, reading, and studyingtogether with other students. Second, self-study and individually teachingshould be encouraged to enhance study efficiency. Third, more comprehensivecourses are needed, rather than only general knowledge courses. Fourth, learnfrom life and applies those lessons to the daily life.
