The 5 Types of Roommates You』ll have in College

Alex Lui

College can be the best four years of your life…or the worst. For many of you who don』t have siblings, college will be the first time that you will have to share a room with someone. Your college experience, especially during your freshman year, will be heavily dictated by the person you live with. But what kind of roommates should you expect? The teachers at KKA have collaborated and together, they have carefully assembled the 5 most common types of roommates you will meet, drawn from either their own personal experiences or from those of their college peers.

1. Super nerdy roommate

For most Western students, college is the perfect environment for them to discover their identities and find out what they are most passionate about. Being away from their homes and parents gives them the opportunity to experiment on different ways to have fun. However, for the 「super nerdy」 roommate, he or she still regards college as only a school. You will always find this roommate studying. When you come home from class, you』ll find this person huddled over his desk. When you are back from a fun day of hanging out with friends, you bet your roommate will have spent the whole day finishing the assignment due next week. If he or she isn』t home, they』re probably at the library. Your roommate will give you a mean glare if you disrupt their studying at all. This person will never sleep late and will sometimes get annoyed at you when you leave the light on at10pm. As soon as the sun rises, he or she will be back on the quest for knowledge. The nerdy roommates are generally socially awkward but will be very passionate when you talk about their academic interests. On the plus side, they are usually very nice and responsible and will let you do whatever you want as long as it doesn』t bother their studying!

2. Party animal

This type of roommate is the complete opposite from the nerdy one. These roommates may have been heavily restricted as a high schooler by their parents, so as soon as they get a sense of freedom in college, their repressed wild sides are unleashed. Most college students would only go out to parties on Friday or Saturday nights, but this roommate will try to party every night! They will hold pre-game events in your room without your consent most of the time, and these will leave your room completely trashed. (The pregame is the warmup party before the actual party). Of course, it would be your duty to then clean up the room. They will come back from parties late into the night and wake you up. Sometimes they will bring a girl or guy home and ask you to leave. When you first meet this person, you』ll think he or she is a super fun person. You』ll enjoy spending time with them, and will even party with them at the beginning. But when schoolwork gets busy, you』ll most likely shift your priorities away from partying. Your roommate, however, will get turnt year-round, even when midterms and finals are coming their way. When they are home, they will be blasting music at max volume or practicing their dance moves; you better get used to that quick! While annoying, this roommate will have its benefits though. If you』re ever bored, you can always count on them to give you an entertaining story of their crazy nocturnal endeavors. He or she will constantly introduce you to new people too, so you』ll make a ton of new friends whom you would never have met without your roommate.

3. Athlete

The athlete. This roommate is either on a sports team or is a gym rat, and will probably feel superior to you when he or she first meets you. They will be incredibly fit, making you constantly envious of their chiseled bodies whenever they take their shirts off. Every day, there will be a specific time period during which they are away at practice or busy lifting heavy weights in the gym. When their season starts or comes playoff time, you will be able to physically sense their intensity and hype. These roommates will also be passionate about other sports and will try to attend a majority of the sports games at your school. They will also watch professional sports religiously and will invite a lot of their buddies over to watch. Be warned—it will get LOUD. The athlete generally will be a messy person too. Exhausted from a strenuous day of physical exertion, he or she will be too tired to dump their sweaty clothes in the laundry basket. Smelly underwear and socks will be strewn across your floor. Their stench as well as your roommate』s body odor will permeate the entire room, lingering in your room even when he or she is gone competing on the weekends. Although your roommate willing general a very fun and laid back person, your conversations with him or her will most likely begin with 「I hate leg days. I can』t walk.」 or 「I am so sore right now.」 When they greet you, it will be with a cool handshake which you two have invented the first day.

4. The one who is never there

No one knows where this guy is. You』ve met him or her during orientation week, but rarely have seen them since. They seem to have vanished in thin air. Do they shower? Do they ever sleep? Did they drop out? Who knows. Every blue moon or so, you will spot your roommate, but he or she will only stop by for a few minutes before disappearing to who-knows-where again. In some cases, this type of roommate includes the people who experience love at first sight and will get into a relationship as soon as they step onto campus. They will spend most of their time at their romantic partner』s room. Maybe in the future, you』ll get an invitation to their wedding! If you get this type of roommate, this means for the most part, you』ll have the whole room to yourself. You will have all the privacy you could ever want.

5. Your best friend

Your roommate may end up being the coolest person ever. You two may share similar backgrounds, enjoy doing the same activities, and/or have harmonious personalities. Your roommate will be considerate of you, and will ask you for your permission before doing anything out of the ordinary in your room. These types of people will be respectful of your boundaries, like sleeping at the same time as you or not moving any of their belongings past the midway point of the room. You will find yourself inseparable from this person. You two will go to the dining halls together, head off to parties together, and hold study dates together.
