George put the saucepan on the stove and turned on the gas flame underneath it as high as it could go.

George, came the horrible voice from the next room, it is my medicine time.

Not yet, Grandma. He called back, there is still 20 minuted before 11.

What mischief are you up to in there? I hear noises.

喬治把燉鍋放到火爐上，打開煤氣，任憑火焰往高處竄。

喬治，隔壁房間再次傳來了可怕的聲音，到我吃藥的時間了。

還沒呢，姥姥，他回答，還有20分鐘才到11點呢。

你在那搞什麼鬼？我聽見噪音了。

He thought it best not to answer this one. He found a long wooden spoon in the kitchen drawer and stirred it hard. The stuff in the pot became hotter and hotter.

他心想最好別回答這句。他從廚房抽屜里找到一根長木棍，開始用力地攪拌。鍋里的東西變得越來越熱了。

Soon the marvelous mixture began to froth and foam. A rich blue smoke, the color of peacocks, rose from the surface of the liquid. A fiery fearsome smell filled the kitchen. It made him choke and splutter. It was a smell that he had never smelled before. Whenever he got a sniff of it up the nose, firecrackers went off in his skull, and electric prickles ran along the backs of his legs. It was wonderful to stand there stirring the marvelous mixture and to watch it smoking blue, bubbling, frothing and foaming as though it were alive. At one point, he could have sworn he saw bright sparks flashing in the whirling foam.

很快，這些神奇的混合物開始冒泡了。一團濃密的藍色煙霧，是孔雀的藍，從液體的表面緩緩升起。廚房裡瀰漫著一股濃烈刺鼻的味道，讓他感到窒息難受。這是他從來沒有聞過的味道。當他用鼻子使勁一吸的時候，感覺頭顱里在放鞭炮，刺痛感像電流一般順著雙腿背面穿過。站在那攪拌著這個神奇的混合物，看著它不斷地冒出藍色煙霧，不斷地產生無數泡泡的感覺真是太棒了，彷彿裡面有生命。有那麼一個時刻，他發誓自己在這個泡沫的漩渦中看到了亮光閃現。

Suddenly, he found himself dancing around the steaming pot, chanting strange words that came into his head out of nowhere.

突然間，他發現自己正圍繞著這個熱氣騰騰的鍋跳起舞來，吟唱著出現在腦海中但不知從何而來的奇怪的話語。
