佛經里的精衛填海

大多數中國人應該都知道中國民間神化故事《精衛填海》，可是很少有人知道佛經里的精衛填海——野雞滅火。這個故事出自佛經《大智度論》里。它告訴我們只要至誠至信，就一定會感動上蒼。

從前，有一片森林被野火燒著。

森林中有一隻野雞，看見森林發生火災，竭盡全力，飛到水裡，取水滅火，這樣往返不停，不知疲勞，不以為苦。

天帝釋看到這一幕，覺得匪夷所思，就問這隻野雞：「你在幹什麼呢？」

野雞這樣回答：「我為了林中的眾生，想要撲滅大火，保住森林。這片森林覆蓋寬廣，林中清涼快樂，我們各種禽獸以及親屬都依靠它生活。我有體力，怎能偷懶，不去救它？」

天帝又問：「你這樣子賣力滅火，也是於事無補，能堅持到什麼時候？」

野雞決絕地說：「到死為止！」

天帝又問：「誰能證明你的真誠？」

野雞就自己發大誓願說：「如果我的心至誠不虛偽，這火就該自行熄滅！」

這時，凈居天已知道野雞誓願宏大，就幫野雞撲滅大火，並使這片森林永遠茂盛，不再遭受火災。

The celestial king asked again: "When you do this, it is not helpful, can you stick to it?"

The pheasant said steadfastly: "Before I die!"

The celestial king asked again: "Who can prove your sincerity?"

The pheasant made a big vow to say: "If my heart is sincere not hypocritical, this fire should be extinguished by itself!"

At this time, Heaven of Pure Dwellings knew that the pheasant vowed to be grand, and helped the pheasant to extinguish the fire and make the forest flourish forever, no longer suffering from fire.
