MASON LONDON
The design for my beermat is really just a funny way of combining two of my strongest memories from of past World Cups. The mascot for Italia 『90 is one of my earliest memories of the world cup, so for me it has come to symbolise the whole competition. I also love it as a design - the fact they didn"t come up with a cute mascot but for some reason just limited themselves to their flag and a football I find hilarious, it"s so functional - like some sort of brutalist mascot. Then the head butt is one of those crescendos of angst and emotion that appear every now and again in the World Cup, it really floors me to think about the emotion that must have overcome Zidane to head butt someone on the biggest stage in the world of football, when he knows he"s being watched live by millions of people and can"t possibly get away with it.
STUDIO HEY
The South Africans call the Vuvuzelas 「The Horn of Africa」. This love hate instrument is a very strong cultural symbol in their culture, some say that the sound reminds them of a trumpeting elephant.
For Hey, colours are a way of communication and expression. We were inspired by the quirky shape and the bold colors of the hundreds of Vuvuzelas seen during the South Africa World Cup.
WADE JEFFREE
Design 1 represents goals in the most common colours of World Cup jerseys.
Design 2 is a football breaking in the French colours.
BRATISLAV MILENKOVIC
The title of the infamous goal, the Hand of God, was already inspiring for me to make the illustration. It seemed like a good idea to depict it exactly as the name says, which instantly turned the image into the metaphor of one of the most unbelievable moments in football history.
YARZA TWINS
When approaching Weird World Cup moments, we were sure from the first moment that we wanted to represent the "Hand of God" of Maradona. First of all, because we really admire Maradona, but as well, because we think that it』s absolutely hilarious to come up with such an excuse when touching the ball with his hand. Maradona is God, and the 『Hand of God』 touched that ball.
DAN WOODGER
An oscar worthy performance that deserves to be immortalised in beer mat form. In the post game words of the man himself, "Creative players must be able to express themselves if football is to stay a beautiful game"
Rivaldo 2002 (man of the match*) *seriously
VELVET SPECTRUM
I was living in Brighton during the 2010 World Cup and I remember how these things were suddenly everywhere, you couldn"t escape the noise. They definitely helped to build an exciting atmosphere, just not at close range.
BIFF
JACK RENWICK
The study of reflexology became an unusual topic of the 2002 world cup after it became apparent that a brief impact on the shin can cause excruciating pain in the face. Rivaldo』s infamous dive lead to the sending off of Turkish midfielder Hakan ünsal late into injury time in a group stage match.
Club team friendships were booted firmly into row Z at Germany 2006, after Cristiano Ronaldo』s flamboyant protests lead to the sending off of his Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney. As the Englishman walked down the tunnel, Ronaldo was spotted giving a not so subtle wink to the Portuguese bench.
At the ripe old age of 38, Roger Milla became one of the first African players to break onto the international stage – lighting up Italia 『90 by scoring 4 goals and reaching the quarter finals. But it was his trademark corner flag dance that captured the hearts of football fans around the world and pioneered the unusual celebrations we all know and love today.
To many he is the archetypal football villain. Doesn』t like Garlic, casts no shadow, shows no reflection, not a fan of The Sun and probably scared of stakes. Count Suárez struck again in Brazil 2014 – biting Giorgio Chiellini in the 79th minute of a frustrating encounter. Not even so much as a yellow card was shown in punishment.
BRAND NU
Rijkaard spits at Voeller 1990.
BEN HASKING
As an Arsenal fan it was difficult to see Van Persie leave, but there was no possible way to not appreciate this goal. Ludicrous technique!
At the time, it felt like a mistake by Seaman, and a lucky goal. But then watching Ronaldinho play for the rest of his career, you just know he meant it.
THOMAS HEDGER
With the voice of football - John Motson - retiring this year, I thought it was only appropriate for him to have a mention in the Weird World Cup - his commentary of the confusion over Ronaldo in the 1998 World Cup final is as legendary as the man himself.
SARAH BORIS
The front "Z" echoes Zidane"s initial (Zidane / Zizou), it"s also a reference to Zorro"s Z, a reflection on how footballers are perceived as heroes.
The reverse of the coaster spells out ZUT, a french word that might be used to replace a swear word of any sort, without being perceived as improper or inappropriate use of language. ZUT incarnates both a polite version to the fans reactions when Zidane head-butted Materazzi and Materazzi"s behaviour during the game, leading up to the incident. It"s also a "polite" word french people say frequently when they spill their drink so seemed appropriate for a coaster.
BEN TALLON
I"m not sure whether it"s some sort of personal ritual that Roy uses to cleanse his soul, but each time the fiery Irishman transgresses, be it a sacking or in this case, his infamous return home from the 2002 World Cup after telling then boss Mick McCarthy to "Stick it up yer bollocks" it seems that he is to be pictured walking his dog, staring down the media with enough intensity to mind punch their lens right through.
CALLUM STEPHENSON
Jorge Campos brought life to the already eventful 94』 USA World Cup with his fluorescent kits that he designed himself. Considering this happened before I was born, it seems strange but whenever the World Cup is mentioned the first thing that comes to my head is this iconic football kit.
RAJ DRAWS
The kick out moment from the 98 world cup was my introduction to controversy in football, and then seeing how ruthless the UK tabloids can be. I probably would"ve kicked him too, but looked up to see where the ref was first.
KILL COOPER
USA 94 – It kicked off with a weird penalty and ended with one too. Diana Ross knows how to belt out a song but her spot-kick went miles wide of the giant goal at the opening ceremony. Despite endless laughter, it wasn』t as bad as Roberto Baggio』s in the final.
CRAIG OLDHAM
SAMUEL MENSAH
I went for a WorldCup Moment that was very close to my heart. When Ghana beat USA in the 2010 World Cup.
TINA TOULI
Ronaldo』s famous 2002 World Cup haircut can be characterised funny and clever at the same time. It is interesting how he used it as a technique in order to shift people』s attention away from his leg injury. The number 9 of his shirt has been used to depict his funny appearance along with some exciting moments of the 2002 World Cup.
