思想的水墨——法國前總理對一個中國水墨畫家的評論

正值瑞士巴塞爾博覽會開幕之際,位於馬德里的國際畫廊馬勃洛畫廊(Marlborough Madrid),於6月7日推出雙個展:來自中國的當代水墨畫家徐累的「互INTERACT」和西班牙大導演阿爾莫多瓦(Pedro Almodovar)的攝影「靜物vida detenida」。兩位藝術家出自不同文化背景、不同藝術領域,但都通過各有優勢的形式語言,表達了個人與文化的獨特關聯。歷史上的西班牙,是多樣文化融合交流的匯聚地,此次兩展對映,又一次引發了西班牙文化界、媒體和公眾的極大興趣。

全球化的時代,跨文化交流在各種層面上展開,大大增加了藝術家的表現幅度。徐累的新作,及時反映了東西方文化淵源在融合方面的見解,同時暗合了中國人古老的「中和」思想。徐累的繪畫日漸受到國際上的多方關注,在這次展覽上,法國前總理多米尼克·德維爾潘(Dominique de Villepin)為他專述前言,對徐累的藝術作了頗有新意的導讀。德維爾潘先生是一位資深的政治家,同時也是一位具有專業眼光的作家和藝術鑒藏家,作為法籍華人藝術家趙無極的生前好友,他為趙無極的繪畫撰寫了不少評論和詩歌,並以他的影響力持續關注和推廣當代藝術。

徐累是一位罕見的畫家。他的作品不僅可以說話,還可以自己思考。他向我們展示了圖像如何獨立思考。它們如何使自己獨立於觀眾乃至畫家本人。事實上,它們繼續自己的私人談話。

我相信,今天,思考世界也是圖像的任務。當然,語言很重要。當然,思想有發言權。但是人類的全球化已經達到了文化的碰撞,對抗和對話需要滲透和注入人類創造的所有領域,融入到他的思想、夢想和信仰中。這是繪畫藝術的任務。

全球藝術正在誕生於我們世界前所未有的對話。它正在嘗試新的方式和新的可能性。它在很多方面都是複數藝術,有許多不同的出發點以及許多可能的結果。這是一種正在中國,美國,歐洲,中東,非洲和印度同時創作和展示的藝術品。一種深深植根於其多元化傳統和地點的藝術,同時也是一種完全開放於差異和變化之風的藝術。在志同道合的藝術家聯盟中,一個全球靈感的網路正在出現。

其中,徐累有一個很特別的地方。他是夢的追逐者。他追求最內在的人類經驗的怪異形象。他面對我們帶著神秘的意義和矛盾的謎團。他的畫是悖論和有趣的。它們有夢的品質。在這裡,在風景的碰撞中,當義大利文藝復興時期的山石試圖在中國古代精緻的山水畫景觀中找到自己的位置時,我們直接見證了對於物質、存在和表徵兩種完全不同的觀念的對抗。矛盾沒有解決,它被制定出來,被接受和超越。徐累並不直接表現視象,而是他進行了用於觀念判斷的修辭實驗。

正是在這一點上,徐累是中國當代藝術中非常重要的一代的代表。那是中華民族自豪感的覺醒和中國對外開放的一代。這一代人不得不進入傳統與創新之間,過去與未來之間的分裂時期的和解之路——而這正是中國乃至全世界政治和歷史動蕩的時刻。但這也是東西方之間破裂世界的和解。

徐累直面矛盾,人類最親密和最典型的經驗的統一,以及文化的多樣性,這些經驗在眼睛能夠把握的語言中表達出來。這就是為什麼徐累用思想來繪畫。他讓畫布自己思考,在兩匹半馬之間交談,讓人想起唐宋中國的象徵,其他古代希臘和羅馬類型的回憶,一個靜態和神聖的,另一個在一個浮躁的行列中,一個在線條和色調的優雅,另一個集中在一個淺浮雕的印象。

在我們當今的對抗世界中已經聽不到什麼好消息。然而徐累的作品是其中少有的好消息,因為他帶來了一種能夠克服矛盾的、生動的藝術。

法國前總理、外交部長、內政部部長、國內安全與地方權力部部長,資深外交家。作為政治家,德維爾潘一直把建設和平作為自己的行動指南。在擔任法國外交部部長期間,因在伊拉克問題上持反對態度而贏得國際聲譽,在國際政壇上擁有廣泛影響力。作為文學家,他曾多次獲獎,著有暢銷書《鯊魚與海鷗》《另一個世界》《歐洲人》,中文版著作《論戰爭與和平》近期在中國出版。

Parallel to the opening of Art Basel, the international gallery Marlborough Madrid unveiled two solo exhibitions on the 7th of June. One tilted 『Interact』 showcases the works of contemporary Chinese ink artist Xu Lei, and 『Vida detenida』 exhibits Spanish director Pedro Almodovar』s photography. The two artists come from different cultural backgrounds and artistic territories, yet they both explored the unique linkage between the individual and culture through their distinctive expressive forms. Since Spain has historically been a locale of cultural fusion and dialogue, the juxtaposition of the two solo exhibitions aroused immense interest in Spanish cultural and media sectors as well as amongst the general public.

In a globalised era, the multiplicity of cross-cultural interactions creates new possibilities of artistic expressions. The new works of Xu Lei reflect the understanding of fusion in both Eastern and Western cultures, gesturing towards the ancient thought of 『Zhong He』 (equilibrium and harmony) in Chinese philosophy. Increasingly, Xu Lei』s paintings are gaining international attention, which is manifested in the refreshing commentary written for him by the former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin. Mr. Villepin is not only a seasoned politician but also a connoisseur and collector. As a friend of the late Chinese French artist Zao Wu-Ki, he has written extensively on Zao"s works in the forms of both commentary and poetry and continues to help to expand the international influence of contemporary art.

Xu Lei is a rare painter. He』s a painter who lets his paintings not only speak for themselves, but also think by themselves. He shows us how images think on their own. How they can make themselves independent from the viewer and even from the painter. Indeed, they carry on with their private conversation.

I believe today, it』s also the task of images to think the world. Of course words matter. Of course ideas will have their say. But the globalization of mankind has reached a point where the collision, the confrontation and the conversation of cultures need to penetrate and infuse all spheres of man』s creation, into his very thoughts, dreams and beliefs. This is the task of art, of painting.

A Global Art is being born out of the unprecedented dialogue of our world. It is trying new ways and new possibilities. It is in many way a plural art, with many different starting points as well as many possible outcomes. An art that is being created and shown in China, in America, in Europe, in the Middle East, in Africa, in India at the same time. An art deeply rooted in its diverse traditions and locations, but at the same time an art totally open to the winds of difference and change. In this fraternity of like minded artists, a web of worldwide inspirations is appearing.

Among them, Xu Lei has a very particular place. He is a hunter of dreams. He pursues the eerie image of the innermost human experience. He faces us with mystery of meaning and with the enigma of contradictions. His paintings remain paradoxical and intriguing. They have the quality of dreams. Here in the collision of landscapes, when rubbles of Italian renaissance stones try to find their place in fine drawn ink landscapes of ancient China, we are direct witnesses of the confrontation of two concepts of matter, of existence, of representation. The contradiction isn』t resolved, it is worked out, accepted and transcended. Xu Lei doesn』t so much represent visions as he elaborates rhetorical experiments to judge concepts.

In this endeavor, Xu Lei is a spearhead of a very important generation for Chinese contemporary art, the generation of awakening of Chinese pride and of China』s opening up to the world. This generation has had to enter the path of reconciliation of fractured times, between tradition and innovation, between past and future – and this in moments of great political and historical turmoil, in China and around the world. But it was also the reconciliation of a broken world, between East and West.

Xu Lei confronts contradictions, the unity of human experience in its most intimate and quintessential and the diversity of cultures expressing this experiences in languages the eyes are able to grasp. This is why Xu Lei paints with ideas. He lets the canvas think for itself, converse between two half-horses, one reminiscent of the symbolizations of Tang and Song China, the other memories of ancient greek and roman types, one static and hieratic, the other in an impetuous cavalcade, one in the elegance of lines and shades of colors, the other concentrated in the impression of volumes of a bas-relief.

There are few good news in our world of confrontations. Xu Lei』s work is one of them, because he announces the vivid capacity of art to overcome contradictions.
