本期分享人:Yang

我是一名剛參加工作的職場新人,從事的是生物新葯的研發工作,這是一項需要經常性地閱讀相關的英文科技資料的工作。回想我這十幾年學習英語的歷程,我越發體會到命運的不可預測和精彩之處。我曾經以為我這輩子應該不怎麼會用到英語,而有趣的是,現在英語成了我安身立命、贏得幸福的法器。

Thank you, Yang for your compliments about my 知乎 answer. I"m always happy to know I have helped someone improve their English. Yang reminds us that learning English for the sake of learning English can be very boring. But the reward of learning English, or any language, is being able to use it to learn more and communicate with others! That is the beauty of learning a language: the world it opens for you! So study English to readHarry Potterin its original language or to chat with a foreign friend rather than to remember how to figure out whether the sentence contains a predicate nominative.

I made some corrections to what Yang wrote to help all the E-Speller friends improve their writing too. (Yang, I didn"t highlight all the spelling mistakes and punctuation problems from your original writing, so please check what I changed and compare it to what you sent me.)

我對 Yang 的文章進行了一些修改,希望 E-Speller 的朋友們可以從中學到一些英文寫作的技巧。

I hope Yang"s article is helpful and inspiring. Meanwhile, all the E-Speller friends and I are looking forward to the story you will share. (Stories in Chinese are accepted. If you share your story in English, please include a Chinese translation, so everyone can fully understand your story)

希望 Yang 的分享對你有一些幫助和啟發。同時,我和所有栗子英文的朋友們也非常期待你的精彩分享!(你可以完全用中文分享你的故事。如果你願意用英文分享,請同時提交一份中文翻譯。)

Everyone who shares will have the chance to get free private English lessons. Please check the details from the link below.

所有的分享者都有機會獲得我的英文私教課。詳情請參考下面鏈接的文章。

My Peregrinations through English Learning and Usage

我學習和使用英語的奇幻歷程

Dear Liz,

親愛的栗子老師:

I am happy and a little nervous to write to you. About three months ago, when Iwas browsingbrowsedsome postsinonZhiHu, I was attracted by anuseful and detailed reply, whichiswaswritten by you. I must admit that I have forgotten the post, but I have remembered you, and, naturally, I subscribedtoyoursubscriptionoffical WeChataccountin WeChat.

此刻,我懷著興奮又有點緊張的心情給您寫信。大約三個月前,當我瀏覽知乎的帖子時, 無意中我被一個有用而又具體的回答給吸引住了。沒錯,您就是那位回答者。我必須承認我對那是個什麼帖子一點印象都沒了,但我卻記住了您,自然地,我關注了您的微信公眾號。

My journey of English learning is somewhat complex. I mean, it is funny, unpredictable, painful and luckyas our lives.

I started learning Englishatonmy first dayinofmiddle school, from A-Z. At the beginning,itIiswasmyfondnessoftolearnlearninghow to write and pronounce the letters because my mother had taught me how to do this. Later on, as the learning progressgettinggotdeeper and deeper, I felt therehaswassomething difficultinaboutEnglish learning, especially the intricate grammar.

ExceptBesidesEnglish, I learned mathematics, physics, Chinese, etc. well, so my English teacher hoped Icancouldgetagood score in English too, for this determined which high school Icancouldenterinaftergraduategraduatingfrom middle school. Actually, she really did a lotof effortsto help me, but it seemed that I never lived up to her expectation. Today, when I recall this, I still appreciate my teacher very much. Unfortunately, those grammar points still make me confused(could also say "still confuse me"). In any event, though I never got a fairly good score in English during my middle school time, I never gave up English. I just took this "burden" to my high school.

The English examination system in high school was as terrible as in middle school. The exam was embedded with much grammar analysis and inference of the author"s implications. What a boring test! Once my high school English teacheraskedcalledme to his office and said "Whyyoudidn』tdon"tyoutry to make a little effort in English learning?" Then I replied without any hesitation "I really think I will not use English in my life." As a result, he didn"t say anythingwordagain. I must say heiswasa nice teacher, and I owe himanapology. Anyhow, I enjoyed reading the articles intheexam papers, and again, I didn"t give up English completely. I hold the "burden"continuallycontinuously.

The turning point occurredatduringmycollagecollegetime.AtInmy second year atcollagecollege, wehavehada course called biochemistry, and wehavehada distinguished professor, who wasknowledgeable, kind, gentle, and conscientious. He liked introducing some English reading materials to us to let us knowaboutsomethingthefrontiersin biology. Actually, his coursewareiswashalfofinChinese and halfofinEnglish, and hehad sharesharedmany tricksinforEnglish learning.FollowedFollowinghis suggestions, I read the "bible" of biochemistry,The Principles of Biochemistry, whichisreallyexcitedignitedmy enthusiasminforusingEnglishusagebecause thisiswasmythefirst timeIfound Englishisreally useful and powerful, for Icancouldknowlearnthe concepts of biochemistry accurately by reading this great book. Later on, my reading material was not limited to biochemistry, but spread to genetics, molecular biology, chemistry, and even mathematics. And Iknownknowthe most importantthingis nottolearn English, buttouse English in our daily lives. Recognize her power and beauty then let her get into your life. Back to my biochemistry teacher, he is really a figure of inspiration, many thanks to that respectable gentleman.

Now, I can"t helpbutmyself tosay, I am very, very fortunate. Much appreciation must be given totheEnglish language for, withthe help of English, I got acquainted with my girlfriend, ajollybeautifuljollyRussian girl. At the time, I did not know any Russian, and sheonly knownknew onlya little bit of Chinese.isEnglishiswhowhatboundweustwotogetherandsotightly.

此刻,我忍不住地要說,我真是非常非常幸運。我必須十分感謝英語這門語言,藉由它的幫助,我認識了我的女朋友,一位可愛又漂亮的俄羅斯姑娘。那時候,我一點俄語都不懂,而她也只懂一點漢語,是英語讓我們僅僅地結合在一起。

Undoubtedly, English has changed my life orbit and became the lifeblood of my career and life. Thanks, English.

毫無疑問,英語改變了我的命運軌跡並成為了我事業和生活的生命線。謝謝你,英語。

ThisThesearemy peregrinations through English learning and usage. Thanks, dear Liz.

這就是我學習和使用英語的奇幻歷程。謝謝,栗子老師。

YoursSsincerely,

Yang
