指骨共14節，拇指兩節，其他四指各三節，趾骨是腳趾上各塊骨的統稱,拇趾兩塊,其他各趾均三塊，現以手指為例：由近側向遠側依次為近節指骨（Proximal）、中節指骨（mediate）、遠節指骨（Distal），這樣子就形成了兩個關節即：「近端指間關節」和「遠端指間關節」。

近端之間關節（由近節指骨+中節指骨）：Proximal（近端）＋Interphalangeal（Inter「兩者之間」）＋Joint＝PIP Joint

遠端指間關節（由遠節指骨+中節指骨）：Distal（遠端）＋Interphalangeal＋Joint＝DIP Joint

指間關節，又名指骨間關節interphalangeal joint，由上一節指骨滑車與下一節指骨底構成，為滑車關節，只能沿冠狀軸做屈伸運動，是單軸關節（肘關節就也是典型的滑車關節）。
