The habit I developed early in my career was asking a question in every meeting I was in. I used to be terrified to speak out in front of others. So I never did. Besides being shy, I was a nerdy engineer who lacked confidence. In meetings, it was 100% certain that I wouldn』t say anything, unless I was called on.

我在職業生涯早期養成的一個習慣是:在我參加的每個會議上都提出一個問題。我曾經非常害怕在別人面前說話 ,所以我從不這麼做。不只是害羞,我還是個書獃子工程師。除非別人讓我回答,我絕對不會在會上說一個字的。

But when I decided to pursue a business career in my mid-20s, I knew I had to express myself more if I was going to be successful. So instead of sitting around passively, I developed the habit of getting myself to ask a question in meetings. In my mind, asking a question was a lot less risky than sharing a thought or opinion. But doing this forced me to speak out and participate. Just hearing myself express something out loud built my confidence. And because I didn』t want it to ask something stupid, it also helped me improve my listening skills and pay closer attention to what others are saying.

不過當我在20多歲時決定從商的時候,我知道如果我想成功就必須表達自己。所以我不再干坐著,而是養成了在會議上提問的習慣。在我看來,提問的風險遠比分享觀點要低。但是這樣做迫使我發言並參與。通過表達自己,我的自信增長了。也因為我不希望提出愚蠢的問題,我學會了更好地傾聽,更密切地關注他人的意見。

Although I developed this habit to overcome my fear of speaking out, this is also how I developed my listening skills and ability to ask good questions. Trust me, these skills apply to any situation where you』re trying to learn, understand, clarify, or confirm something. They also save you time, reduce mistakes and misunderstandings, and get you better results!

所以,儘管我最初通過這種習慣克服了對講話的恐懼,但同時它培養了我的聆聽和提問技巧。請相信我,上述這些技能適用於任何學習、理解、澄清或確認某些事情的場景,同時節省你的時間,減少錯誤和誤解,並為你帶來更好的結果!

You can』t worry about people who are good talkers. Who try to look good in front of others. Or who take credit for things they didn』t do. These people have little to do with your ability to achieve your success. It』s what you can do that matters.

其實,你不用太在意那些口才好、想要表現得高人一等的人,也不用擔心他們總是想要搶佔別人的功勞。這些人和你自身的成功沒什麼關係,你自己做得怎麼樣才是最重要的。

There』s a saying, 「The truth will reveal itself」. As a recruiter for over 20 years, I』ve interviewed a lot of people. In the critical moments where you need to prove yourself to others, you need to be solid. Such people aren』t. So in your critical job interviews, good employers and experienced hiring managers will ask you about your capabilities and achievements. And they』ll be able to tell how well you can do something. They』ll ask you how you do it. Why you did it the way you did. And even why you didn』t do it another way.

有一句話說得很好:真相自會水落石出。作為一個有20年獵頭經驗的人,我面試過許多人。當關鍵時刻,你需要向別人推銷你自己時,你要有拿得出手的硬實力。而這些人就不能。一個好的僱主和有經驗的人事經理會在面試中問你,你的能力和達成的成就,由此他們就知道你能在工作中做得多好。他們會問你是如何做到的?為什麼你選擇這麼做?甚至會問你為什麼不用另一種方式做?

So good talkers, sure, they』ll impress others sometimes. But it』s the people with solid capabilities and achievements who stand out over those who know how to talk, but can』t back up what they say.

口才好的人有時確實會給別人留下深刻的印象,但他們也只知道怎麼說,而不能自證其說。唯有紮實的硬實力和成就才能真正使你脫穎而出。

When hiring manager ask me if I am applying forother companies, should I tell the truth?

面試官問我還投遞過其他公司嗎?

這是送分題還是送命題呢?

Why not? Or, what would be your reason for not telling the truth? Is there anything you gain by avoiding or not responding truthfully to this question? As both a recruiter and a hiring manager, I can』t think of anything that I』d hold against you if you told me that you』re also applying for other opportunities with other companies.

為什麼不吶?或者說,你不說實話的理由是什麼吶?對於這個問題,逃避或者不實話實說會給你帶來什麼好處?作為一名獵頭,也當過人事經理,如果你告訴我你在應聘別公司的工作機會,我想不出這有什麼不好的。

First of all, it』s the most normal thing for a potential employer or hiring manager to ask you what other opportunities you may be exploring. So don』t get alarmed about this question. And from working with many top companies, I can』t think of any that are that arrogant to think that they』re the only company you should consider working for. I』ve never met one who had a 「How dare you!」 reaction when finding out that a candidate is also applying to other companies. If you ever meet an employer who responds in this way, give up on pursuing them. They』re either way too egotistical, sensitive, controlling, unrealistic, or all of these.

首先,對於一個潛在的僱主或人事經理而言,最普遍的做法就是問你,你是否還有在看別的工作機會,所以你不必擔心這個問題。通過與許多頂尖公司的合作,我想不出有哪家公司會這麼傲慢,覺得他們是你唯一應該考慮的公司。我也沒遇到過一個人,當他發現候選人同時也在申請另一家公司時,他會覺得「 你居然敢申請其他公司?」如果你遇到過一個這樣回答的僱主,別考慮他們公司了。他們要麼太任性、敏感、控制欲強、不現實,要麼以上全部問題他都有。

And from the employer/hiring manager side, I』d have a concern about any candidate who has difficulty responding to this question. You don』t have to say which companies you』re applying to. You can just say, 「Yes, I am, but I』d rather not say which companies.」 That』s a reasonable response. But if I feel you』re avoiding my question or making up something, I』m going to think that you』re either not that mature, confident, straightforward, or all of these. Which leaves a poor impression on others.

從僱主或人事經理的角度來看,如果你覺得很難回答這個問題,那我有點替你愁。你不用說你在應聘哪一家公司,你只要說:「是的,但目前還不能透露是哪家公司。」這個回答很合理的。但如果我感覺到你是在迴避我的問題或瞎編,那在我看來你就不是很成熟、自信、坦誠,或者這些問題你都有。這會給別人留下不好的印象。

I』m the type of boss who rarely leaves the office before his employees do. To be honest, I don』t mind it when those who work for me leave each day earlier than me. As long as they finish the work that they need to do for the day. As a boss, that』s the most important thing I want to see. Not people hanging around the office as long as I do just because they feel they have to look good or impress me.

我是那種,絕對不會比員工早下班的老闆。說實話,只要員工完成了當天的工作,我是不介意他們比我早回家,因為我看重的是他們有沒有把該做的事情做完,而不是因為我還在所以得留在辦公室磨磨蹭蹭不肯走,讓我覺得他們很努力。

One thing I』ll say though. A couple of years ago, we had a summer intern. Whenever she left the office for the day, she』d come up to me and say, 「I』m about to leave now. Is there anything else that you』d like for me to do before I go?」

但有件事我想說。很多年前我們有個暑期實習生,每天下班前她都會跑過來問我:「我要下班了,還有什麼其他事情你需要我做的嘛?」

I really liked that. And hearing her say this left a very good impression about her on me. To me, it showed her professionalism, sense of responsibility, and orientation towards supporting both me and our company. Try it. Whether you』re someone who leaves the office relatively early or late, it』s a great thing to say to your boss before you take off each day.

我很欣賞員工這樣的行為,她給我留下了很好的印象,因為這體現了她的專業態度,她對工作的認真負責,並且全力在支持我和我的公司。你不妨也試試,不管你比老闆下班早還是走得比較晚,走之前問問你老闆還有什麼需要做的,他也會對你印象很好的。

How important is network in career?

工作中人脈有多重要?

If you ask top executives how they achieved their success, I believe most will point to key opportunities in their career that came through introductions or encounters from others. In an article that I helped a friend edit recently, he mentions a recent Linkedin survey that says that about 85% of all jobs are filled through networking. And a study by Payscale showed that at least 70% of jobs aren』t even listed .

Actually, some of the best employees I』ve hired over the years came to our company through referrals from existing or former employees, not from our job postings. While they all had to make a good impression on me once I met them, it』s highly unlikely they would have ever known about our company or opportunity if not for the person who introduced them to us.

我這麼多年來招聘過的最好的員工,很多是通過在職或者以前的員工介紹給我的。儘管面對面時他們都努力想要給我留下好印象,但如果沒有熟人介紹的話我們可能都不會有機會見面,他們也可能不了解我們公司。

Ultimately, your career success will be based on your capabilities and achievements. But the reality is, no matter how talented, qualified, or hardworking you are, if you aren』t able to access attractive opportunities, it』ll be difficult for you to attain the success you』re capable of or aspire to achieve. While networking by itself won』t allow you to capture opportunities and your long-term success, your ability to build relationships and develop your network can definitely bring huge benefits to your career.

你職業的成功的確取決於你個人的能力和成就。但現實是,不管你多有天賦,多有能力或者多努力,如果你沒有好的機會,那你就沒有獲得成功的渠道了。儘管社交並不能讓你直接拿下那個機會或者讓你獲得成功,但通過擴大社交圈子對你取得成功還是大有裨益的。
