Russia Seeks Chinese Educational Partnerships

Russian universities are seeking partnerships with Chinese institutions. Russia』s Graduate School of Management at Saint Petersburg University offers six international academic partners from China, including City University, CUHK, and HKUST from Hong Kong, in addition to four from the US and three from the UK. Lomonosov Moscow State University Business School also offers partnerships with Peking University』s Guanghua School of Management and several institutions in Japan and South Korea. Above all, Russia is eager to boost educational ties with China. 「The world is going to China. A huge percent of companies are concerned about expanding internationally, according to a study conducted by Tipalti. More than two-thirds of respondents referred to the US-China trade dispute and NAFTA renegotiations as key concerns. The US』s decision to pull out of the TPP and preparations for Brexit are not far behind. Many are also concerned about the new General Data Protection Regulation in the EU, and fear they are not compliant, or do not think it is worth their investment to ensure they are compliant.

The US is trying to compete with China』s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and is expanding its infrastructure efforts in the Asia-Pacific region. The initiative has been announced by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – he will visit Southeast Asia later this week where he is expected to discuss funding plans for the region. The so-called 「Indo-Pacific Economic Vision」 intends to increase the financial support that the US government will provide to countries in the region via the US International Development Finance Corp.
