Are different jobs equal?
Question: Everyone says "all work is equal", but most of people don』t want to engage in the exhausting and embarrassing work, such as sweep streets or street vendors. What exactly should we make of the statement "all work is equal"?
Guru answers: Why are we not willing to do such work? The reason is the arrogance which let us concern our pride and being worried about discrimination. All of our sufferings originate from desire, hatred, delusion, arrogance and doubtfulness, essentially not apart from "self".
The so called "all work is equal" doesn』t mean the jobs are the same in terms of the phenomenon but refers to the equality and indiscrimination of the mentality. The 365 kinds of jobs are different in terms of the phenomenon. The nature of all Dharma is one in essence. Really recognizing this point requires the practice reaching certain degree. If you don』t attain this realm, you can also understand it as this: everyone』s current job opportunity is the result of good or bad karmas he did in the past. We can say all are equal by the law of cause and effect.
